Stovelessness

Expanding upon the oatcake theme - I have tried other solid savoury biscuit, and the only others that I have found to be substantial enough are Westray Cabin Biscuits (again from Orkney), sadly hard to find now that I live 'Sooth'.

Arran smokey garlic cheddar 450kcal/100g
Most chorizo 450kcal/100g
My choice of topping, if I can get that cheese 😋
Sounds good!

I'm particularly fond of this
Their Black Bomber mature cheddar is pretty good too.

Even when I carry a stove, I don't mess about with porridge or making a brew for breakfast, being keen to break camp and get a few miles under my belt before stopping for a cereal bar, Stoats being my favourite (despite them suffering from shrinkflation a couple of years back).

..and of course I rarely miss an opportunity to 'stoke up' at a pub or cafe! 😁

I imagine the Snowdonia be very similar to the Arran stuff (probably because the packaging is identical 😂). If I see it somewhere (unlikely in Scotland) I'll give it a go.

This stuff is good too and much better value if you don't mind cutting and repackaging for backpacking.

Just wish my other half would eat decent cheese... we always end up with red Leicester 😪

I use the Aldi Scottish Rough Outcakes. 447Kcal per 100g. Used to make a Primula sandwich. Primula from B&M next door. A snide Pepperami (Aldi Meatster), some Aldi Barber's Cave Aged Extra Mature Cheddar Cheese & maybe a mini Pork Pie.

We were lucky enough to get a Snowdonia Cheese hamper a year or so back, so got the chance to try 5 flavours. I like the standard size of a waxed cheese, and I suspect that the wax helps it to keep well on the hill.

As for Red Leicester -

or maybe even...

The Aldi smoked cheese slices with ham bits are quite nice between a couple of crackerbreads (or Rivita at a push) and both last a week in an airtight plastic tub if it's not too warm out. Even better with a squirt of Original Primula.

Best cheese I've found that keeps well is vintage Goats, don't know in the UK but it's getting more popular here, or maybe it's just me buying it all. 🙂

Reads like a griddle scone to me.
Not sure how authentic that Birsay recipe is, but when I had Fatty Cutties on Westray, they were an altogether different thing to the griddle scones that I have had, much thinner and a lot more solid. A bit more like a Welsh Cake (another potential calorie packed hiking snack).

On the subject of other solid calorie packed cakes, Chorley Cakes and Parkin deserve a mention. Both excellent belly timber.

Oatcakes, cheese and a packet of olives (especially the spicy green ones) make a fantastic lunch. The olives have enough moisture to counteract the dryness of the oatcakes and cheese.
