Thanks but that Rab Latok has some really bad reviews on GO.

By Winter I don't mean thick snow, blizzards or -10 temps etc. I just mean generally this time of year. I wont be going out of it's going to be baltic.

Just getting a list done for five days in the Cairngorms next week, it's looking snowy, windy and cold but it should be fun. If it looks like we'll get some decent snow levels I'll be taking a little pulk along too, I'll probably grab my MSR Whisperlite and a few other bits, anything heavy can go in the base of the pulk and i'll carry a pack full of down :)

Check out the clothing worn weight, I think I'm going to be warm enough. As we're hammock camping we'll probably have a few base camps and go off exploring through the day

it's not the cold that's the problem. It's the wet when just above or around freezing . it can be 6C but with a strong blustery wind and hard rain, a tissue paper thin waterproof and ul down mid ain't gonna be that comfortable for long if your progress slows due to visibility/flagging morale/injury/terrain issues etc. Even worse nearer freezing.

that's why weatherwise, high Uk hill winter conditions can sometimes be considered as hard or worse than much higher continental mountains.

like anytime, if you choose your weather windows carefully you can get away with all sorts of minimal gear. gotta do the Risk assessment I guess.

ADz - has it arrived yet? What do you reckon to fit? (specifically across the back of the shoulders - what size is yours?)

I have a 2007 size L Superfly that needs replacing soon, thinking on getting one of these Blacks Bargains (can get it for £108 with a further 10% sale code). Used an XL 2011 superfly on the TGO and found it a comfortable fit. I'm finding most Montanes come up a bit narrow on shoulders these days. But some reviews of the Direct Ascent claim it to be a baggy cut?

Mole.. What would you be wearing under it as a mid layer? You got me questioning the sizing on my Montane stuff. I was out in my Direct Ascent coat last week wearing a fury fleece AND a prism jacket underneath. Just checked the sizing of my stuff and my DA shell is size medium and the other two are size largeo_O Like everything else Montane I own except an Alpha guide jacket which is also medium.
Fireball smock = L
Minimus coat = L
etc..etc..

In summary, the Large might be big enough..IIRC Adz has a Prism in Large to try underneath if that might give you an idea of sizing?

Hope that helps?:)

TartanF. Thanks - that does give me a bit of an idea.

I could be wearing anything from just a baselayer to the sort of multilayer setup you describe.

I have an XL Montane Fury and XL Haglofs Barrier Pro but most of my gear is size L (some even M).

I recently tried a couple of ME Jackets on, (and an Arcteryx in case I win the lottery!) and found a size L good fit everywhere (inc arm length) except tight again across shoulder/upperback. Enough to put me off spending out on one. XL was just way too big across the middle/front.

Mole - I find I'm XL in all Montane now e.g recently purchased Air Jacket. I take L in Rab and nearly all other manufacturers. If you look at the sizing chart I think Montane now make an L an inch shorter on the chest than others. My old Montane gear is size L (and still fits)

Nice one - suspect I'm the same (and not just because we are getting older!). Have plenty of older size L Montane stuff that still fits fine.

£108 for a decent waterproof can't be bad. Might have to go for it

It's a large bud. I just tried it on and it felt fine across shoulders even with a Prism jacket underneath it felt comfortable to wear and no tightness anywhere. I've not been out for a walk in it yet though but from first impressions it's decently sized for me.

I'm a 42 chest and 36 waist if that helps. The large is supposed to be for 34 waist but not sure why it says that because it was fine on me, plenty of room.

By the way, I originally had the Montane Prism in XL but was just too baggy for me so feel their Large is just right for me.

A great price

My first shell was a Berghaus cornice, I think i paid £200 for a coat with a hood that stashes into its collar
