new tent for me - not one for the UL purists though - Force Ten Xenon UL, bought primarily for cycle touring but I'm also hoping it will work as a winter shelter. I got it for £200 with go outdoors price match so happy with that. It weighs about 1.75 kg but I've dropped about 150 grams replacing the crappy pegs and some of the guys and ditching the overbuilt stuff sack, so I'm really liking the look of it so far. My only concern is whether it will stand up to very serious weather, the poles look a possible weak point? The reason I loved my Akto, contrary to popular opinion was that it provided a psychological sense of security unlike any other sub-2kg shelter I ever had, and which for me mitigated some of its well documented shortcomings. For me personally that is important in winter, even if it might be somewhat illusory.
I love the fact it has a proper tough, 70 denier floor, no more faffing around with polycro sheets blowing about and I love the space it provides and the bright interior, with loads of storage pockets. A big bonus is it fits directly in a pannier bag, poles as well and on the odd occasions my partner or my dog, or maybe both at a stretch come with me, it will work for that as well. For 3 season solo hiking trips I use something lighter. In some ways, its a bog standard tunnel tent and sure, I could get a lighter shelter but so far, albeit only after one three day pootle around the cotswolds lol, I really like it. I have a bit of a soft spot for Vango/F10 anyway, and the build quality is excellent, something I've come to appreciate after owning a few cottage shelters.
