Packing Lists - Phone Apps

Packing Lists!

OK so after having seen several comments on various forums recently of people forgetting critical items at home, or of not knowing what weight their bag is going to be (or is) I thought I'd start a thread on how to overcome those issues if, like me, you have a tendency to be forgetful !

I hope this is pertinent to this forum, if not, well a Mod can delete it.

I've used the Packing Pro app for many years now (Apple only) however there are other apps of this type for both Apple and Android phones (and iPads etc.).

In the Catalog I add items along with their weights, which I can then use in any new list I create (new lists can be made using any previous list as a template).

Here are a few screenshots of my packing for a trip starting Monday (and a pic of what I'm taking - note I'm a photographer so carry a lot of photographic gear). Not a full on camping trip this time as I'll be staying in local B&Bs or with local ethnic tribal people in the mountainous, very poor, province of Guizhou, China.
That's irrelevant though - it's the packing app that I hope will help people ! These screenshots just need to make sense so that's the background to this packing list.

Note you can edit anything, move the lists around, add/delete/edit, create new categories, sub-categories and items and even add photographs of items so you remember what they are.
Of course you can also see, at any time, what the total weight of your bags are (you can assign items to different bags and even people) and the weight per category.

Also note these apps don't cost much (US$10-20?) and the Packing Pro app at least is regularly updated. Also just to reiterate : there are numerous apps of this type for both Apple and Android. It's best to spend some time researching to ensure you buy the most suitable app for you.

Hope this helps some people and I'm happy to answer any questions! 🙂Trip List.PNGMain Categories.PNGSub Category.PNGItems in Sub Category.PNGWeight breakdown.PNGWW.jpg

BTW why was this was moved to the much less frequented Kit forum? From the Tech forum (I mean an app is literally the definition of tech) 😂
Just interested to know why.

As it's an app for kit lists I thought it would be better suited to the kit list forum where we've discussed other apps like lighterpack/trailpost etc

I went to Guizhou 20 years ago. Amazing place, incredible villages inhabited by the Dong ethnic group I think, really friendly people, towering rice paddies. Great memories.

** Shameless plug as it is finally available **

You could use my gear management app. Works on iPhone, iPad and Mac and syncs across devices. Supports packs, categories, weight analysis, systems (pack in packs), gear locker (with alternate categories), gear notes, wishlist items that can be added to packs, generate pdf as packing list or to share, import from lighter pack + more

Trying to get all the supporting help material together at the moment. Link

And it’s free!!

I’ve been testing this for @Back in Pack and it is great. Beats lighter pack in my opinion, much more versatile.

Hey, I just downloaded this for Mac. I think you need to adjust the colours/config for dark mode?

I'll have a play around and send feedback & bug reports now that it's usable on Mac too.
I will try to get the YouTube videos uploaded shortly to explain how to use the app effectively

between sick kids, work, studies, coding and hiking. I am a little behind schedule. Apple approved the app far more quickly than I was expecting :)

Yeah I can't wait (flight was cancelled for yesterday so had to reschedule for Monday). I've been to many provinces in my 25 years here but never to Guizhou (57 minority tribes - not Chinese by descent - Miao & Dong the most populous but some tribes are just a few hundred strong, make up about 50% of the population here and some fascinating culture and traditional dress).
To say nothing of the amazing landscape. I'm not sure when I'll get any sleep over the next 3 weeks!
