Google Docs Kit List

I've been working on a spreadsheet on Google Docs recently, I borrowed the format from Chad Poindexter of SticksBlog.com, entering each item of kit along with their weights and then categorising them in to the right pack areas. I find it's a good way of getting the weight down on your pack and helps to lose those unnecessary items, having the numbers there in front of you in black and white helps you work on certain areas, ultimately getting that base weight down.

Here's how to create your own Kit List quickly, once you've copied it you're welcome to edit categories to whatever you like.

  1. Log into your own Google Doc’s account, if you don't have one create one
  2. Open my gear list (Click HERE)
  3. In the top left hand corner click “File”
  4. Next, click “Make a copy…” from the drop-down
  5. In the dialogue box rename it to whatever you want, click “OK”
You can edit the settings so it's only visible to invitees, or you can make it public but uneditable (sp)
The current list I have is for a 3 day gentle hiking trip to the Lake District, I packed for 3 season

So if your using this to pack for a trip, can you just drag and drop all the stuff you want to take? I'm assuming you don't take everything on that list for 1 trip?

Oops, that was my master sheet Steve, it's supposed to be hidden but I must have left it open :)

I've hidden it again now so it should take you to a 3 season loadout

I like it Rich, very similar to the one that I use but with a couple of differences. I like the "location" column, that's a good idea that I'm going to steal.

One thing that I do differently that works well is to do the checklist on a separate sheet, that way you can make a nice clear hard copy with all the info you need to actually pack the kit.

Interesting to read through your generic kit list too dude, I didn't know about zpacks, I may sell a kidney.

Cheers,

Stuart.

Kit lists are always useful, and thanks for sharing an updated kit-list, some times we forget the new "essential" items that need to be included, it's an ever changing survival pack, thanks fella. :)

Just noticed somewhere else you may have made a mistake Rich. On the assorted stakes part you have set quantity as 6 and weight as 69g which would calculate to 414g? Shouldn't the quantity be 1 since it's an assortment and the weight should be the total weight of the stakes?

[edit] Ah my bad, I assumed the quantity field was taken into account in formula but it doesn't appear to be. Is that still right though, 69g for those stakes?

Do you have a Winter list Rich?

Not yet, it's work in progress but I did make a start last night.

It most likely going to be hammock kit, with my 0*F HG quilts and a few extra layers of clothing

Just getting a list done for five days in the Cairngorms next week, it's looking snowy, windy and cold but it should be fun. If it looks like we'll get some decent snow levels I'll be taking a little pulk along too, I'll probably grab my MSR Whisperlite and a few other bits, anything heavy can go in the base of the pulk and i'll carry a pack full of down :)

Check out the clothing worn weight, I think I'm going to be warm enough. As we're hammock camping we'll probably have a few base camps and go off exploring through the day

Shewie - I'm not sure the base weight totals are totalling up right?..on 3season ground and hammock winter tabs..

You could be right, I binned a few lines so the formulas might have gone to pot, I'll take a look

The base weights seem to be correct on both as far as I can see, one of the food formulas was wrong but it was actually lighter anyway so a few more grams saved :) The base weights are a total of all the sections apart from food, brew kit, fuel and anything worn or carried in hand.

Hi, joined after seeing this. Although I am over on OM. Can I ask what the master sheet set up looks like, so I can start my list from their and then add it into a chart?

Welcome to the forum :)

My master sheet is just a page of categories in columns, i.e Shelters, I just list all my shelters underneath and put the weights next to them in another column. It gets populated by adding as you go along, usually when you make a new kit list, I just copy and paste between the sheets.

I've just enabled my master sheet for viewing if you want to take a look, it's not particularly interesting but I'm slowly filling it out.

Thanks Shewie and for the welcome, always nice to have another camping forum to get obsessed with gear on! I will take a look and fill it out for my current paper version I have of kit. And as you say add when you get things :)

Its crying out for a dropdown populated via VLOOKUP on the master sheet. :)
