New As Tucas Foratata Quilt

Hi!

The launch of the new Foratata Quilt is delayed about two weeks. We're finishing photo sessions and web materials. However, since there is a lot of interest in it here are some details:

It has the same proven shape as the Sestrals Quilt: rounded hood, longer and wider than American quilts, and a very efficient, plug-free, closure system.

It uses a schoeller-ftc fabric that has a really nice touch to the skin, and a DWR finish which last longer than many others. Now it’s available in black, red, green and blue colors.

Insulation is 900 cuin pure white goose down. The very best that can be sourced in Europe. In fact, the provider sources down for several well known brands, including Japanese ones which have a very high quality standards. Quilts also feature trapezoidal baffles, which are more thermal efficient than the traditional square ones.

Quilts will be available in 3 base filling weights: 250g, 350 g and 450g. Prices will be (shipping costs to Europe included):
  • Quilt model: 460 € (250 g), 500 € (350 g), and 550 € (450 g).
  • Blanket model: 490 € (250 g), 530 € (350 g), and 580 € (450 g).
  • Poncho model: 530 € (250 g), 570 € (350 g), and 620 € (450 g).

I can vouch for the down qualty which is as good, if not better than Western Mountaineering.

As many will know, I’ve had an early version of this (250g) and it’s my favourite sleeping bag/quilt. Kept me warm on last year’s TGO Challenge.

Marco, from your picture the footbox looks bigger than my Sestrals blanket, or are you using the 450g version and hence have more fill?

Any idea on likely temperature ratings? Similar to the Sestrals range?

Hi Jim,

The Foratata Quilt in the picture has a wide footbox, whereas your blanket is regular width. In addition, the Foratata Quilts are a bit wider overall: more comfortable and also keeps loft more easily.

Regarding temp rating, I'ven been using one with 350 g of fill. I sleep comfortably down to -3 / -4 C wearing only a base layer. Complementing it with a (very) light down jacket a pair of Sestrals Pants, I've pushed it to -8 C.

I reckon my quilt (250g) is warm down to about 3/4c. There’s plenty of room to wear a warm jacket inside. I have Sestrals Pants but have yet to wear them inside the quilt but I reckon, with a warm top, it would take the comfort level down to below freezing.

Mines due soon,be very interested to see how it preforms ,first time using a quilt for me

Thanks Marco, they look very nice - do you have the weights yet? And any particular reason for horizontal baffles? The horizontal footbox combined with vertical baffles higher up is a key attraction of the US quilts.

Hi Tom!

In general I favor horizontal baffles when you look for overall versatility (you can move down to the sides / top). However, vertical baffles, or a combo of vertical and horizontal baffles has their advantages too. Thus, all combos will be offered as options!

Since I think this might be of general interest, I put my answer here too:

Main advantage of vertical baffles is that down is less likely to move around when you move inside the quilt. On the other hand, that’s also an advantage of horizontal baffles, you can move down to the sides / top to adjust how warm the quilt is. With vertical baffles you can also move down, but only from torso to feet area. This is nice if you usually had cold feet but warm torso.

As you can see, no configuration is the best, they are different. If you want the ability to adjust down insulation, go for horizontal baffles. If you prefer that down stays in place most of the time, go for vertical baffles.

Not a comprehensive table yet, but as a reference:
  • Quilt, 350g down, L, Regular: 620 g
  • Blanket, 350g down, L, Regular width: 660g
  • Poncho, 350g down, L, Regular width: 675g
Our design philosophy prioritizes performance and comfort over weight. Thus, the Foratata Quilt won't be lightest in the market, but I bet you it will be the most comfortable and most performer in the ultra light class.

I don’t want to say this,but I’ve had more than a few private messages off other bloggers,people on here,twitter and Facebook ...I won Heindriks comp last yr ..I was over joyed ..We mailed on the 4th and .I replied to As Tucas on the 5 th Dec and was told 2-3 wks for delivery ,but xmas came and went..I messaged again after waiting the first wk of jan... next wk was reply Left it 2 wks no reply then for 10 day then told mon/tue this wk. Again nothing and no reply .. which is very similar to the people who have contacted me ...I’ve gone out of my way to help and buy off,point other people too,various cottage like firms ...but you have to communicate and let customers know what’s happening ..me and all the other customers appreciate your a small outfit ..but we often pay upfront sometimes waiting months for item to arrive ...but when you don’t reply and make what seem to be false promises to your customers it gets very annoying and frustrating ....

It is a real big shame and I’ve been thinking hard about posting this but after the messages I’ve had,it seems like this is not,by along shot, a one time thing ...it’s not hard I’ve run a garage supporting a 24 hr 50 wk fleet of trucks with just 2 off us..you have to comincate and keep to your promises..and that was before everyone having a mobile and 24 hr internet nearly anywhere you go

This post will probably get next to no responses,but this has/ is happening to others and it’s not the right way to treat customers
