Need help with new tent

Hi trek-lighters,

After spending some time lurking and searching on this forum i still have trouble picking a new tent, so i would like to ask your help!
I am looking for a tent recommendation with these goals:
  • 2 person (or a spacious 1 person tent, don't like it too cramped. I am 187cm/6.1ft)
  • Bugnet or an inner tent
  • Trekking pole setup
  • Will be used in the Scottish weather, so hard winds and much rain.
  • Purchasable in Europe, buying a tent from the US will make it really expensive.
  • Weight up to around 1 kg.
So far I'm considering the Trekkertent Drift 2. But i have not found any personal experiences on the internet. So if someone here can share his experiences with this tent that would be great!

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Tent - 2 person + inner net + windworthy + <1kg = moon on stick

…………we'd all like one .

Think there are few on here with some experience of the tent...well I'm hoping so as I have one on order. If you are looking for one I would suggest you place an order with plenty of time before you need it. I also have a Scarp 2 and I know there are about 100 euro cheaper buying in Europe just now instead of the states. Its a bit heavier though at about 1.3kg (ish).

As I'm new to this do you mind explaining why this is not possible?
Is it the weight? if so, what is a good weight i should be looking for that have those specs?

To create a tent space big enough to provide space for 2 people takes a certain amount of 'fabric', plus a similarly large amount for an inner, equals quite a bit of fabric overall.
To keep that amount of fabric to a low weight the 'fabric' will need to be very thin and lightweight. Very thin and lightweight does not tend to engender strength and robustness. Cuben fiber might achieve what you want but is mostly used by US cottage producers and they create tents for warmer more benign US conditions, not UK wet and windy.

Not to say that it's not possible with clever design etc. to make what you want, but you are pushing boundaries and costs will be high.

The Vaude Power Lizard 1-2P (http://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/shelters-1/WF110.html) might be worth a look. It doesn't use trekking poles but is still only just over 1Kg and with the side guys attached is reasonably weather-proof. Bob at backpackinglight.co.uk used the 2-3P version on the TGO a few years ago and that stood up to some serious winds. It's a palace for 1 person (I'm 6' 3' and it's plenty long enough for me) and takes 2 not-too large adult as well.

Another tent is the Nordisk Telemark (https://www.elitemountainsupplies.co.uk/camping-trekking/tents-and-bivi/nordisk-tents/). Perhaps not so good if you on the taller side.

I was going to suggest the Tarptent Notch, although it's strictly a one-person tent, but it seems backpackinglight.de no longer import it. It's reputed to be reasonably weather-proof if properly pitched.

We had a drift 2 for a while. Great tent. But massive - roomy for 2. It was 1.25kg.

If you want UK availability and under a kilo, your main choice is Nordisk Telemark 2.

Not many sub 1kg UK Trekking pole based tents about apart from maybe some Trekkertent variant.

I'd look at Tarptent Notch or Strat 1 or maybe MLD SolomidXL

Nor me, but I was actually thinking of using it without the inner to save weight;), but it's hopelessly draughty (for me anyway) like that.

Thanks for the answers!
I do not really need a tent under 1 kg. as long as the weight is acceptable for the comfort and features the tent provides.
If the tent has all the points im looking for im flexible on the weight.

Personally for 2 people i would consider a Wicki Up 3 or one of the Hexpeak offerings, bags of room for two especially if you plan on seeing lots of wind and rain. Great for taller folk.

A sacrifice will have to be made somewhere, money first probably, then weight. From the ones suggested above a Strat 2 would be my choice. The Telemark 2 looks nice, decent weight but not so suitable for cat swinging.

Worth a punt? £77.63
3F UL Gear seem to be quite decent quality cottage manufacturer in China.

I've got the single man version waiting at PO for me to pick up. Should take around 10-14 days for delivery and there will be no import costs. Trekking pole setup and total of 1155g. I think it comes with full mesh inner but there are 4 season solid inners available separately or maybe ask seller if they will swap it out if needed.

Agreed - that's why there's a part-solid inner option.

I'm going to see whether shorter Pitchloc poles could help, but I've an idea they would mess the pitch up.

I've got the 'solid' inner too……still find it drafty. Summer Scottish use only.

………and I've got a nice MYOG cuben 'mini-Hex' which weights only 100g more, for windy conditions :smug:.

Only 115cm wide for 2 person……..I consider that too narrow for 2 adults. Our kids used to use a tent with that size - it was OK until they grew into teenagers when I sold it before rebellion broke out :bag:.

I think the OP is after a large tent for solo use so this may not be so much of an issue. 115 cm is also the width of the bathtub in Zpacks' Duplex by the way.

The overall dimensions of the 3F tent are a little unclear so interested parties sad better check with the shop...

The Duplex is fine for this married couple. Those who don't want to be too up close and personal might find it a little narrow, though.

Thanks for the answers so far.
Yes the tent will be used for solo use, I don't like being too cramped inside a tent and i'm willing to take the weight penalty for more room.
I still think the Drift 2 would be a really solid choice for me, it seems to have all the perks i'm looking for. Or am i missing something?
