Judging by the popularity of certain threads, I wonder what is the longest folks have gone for without buying something (non consumable) backpacking related :D

Also what is your oldest piece of kit used regularly?

ive done six months without buying anything but it was due to having no dollar rather than by choice.

oldest kit in my pack from a UL standpoint is no more than 18 months. I tend to change stuff as lighter or better options present themselves and flog its predecessor

Ive got some very old static camping kit though.

As i make most of my camping stuff, i dont really buy much gear, but my first down bag some years ago the rab ascent 700 is still with me and still love it, but eyeing up top quilts recently so not sure how long that will last.

My oldest thing is my legs...

Kit wise I guess it is my Evernew cooking pot - getting on for 15 years I think.

Must be over a year since i've bought anything hiking related

Oldest regularly used bit of kit os my Mountain Equipment Ultrafleece pullover, by far the best piece of clothing i've ever owned.
Must have bought it around 1994, been worn and worn and worn, bit dog eared now but still going strong.

If a old box turned up in a old ME warehouse i'd buy em all tomorrow

Karrimor 20l day sack from back when Karrimor were the best. Weighs 220g. I bought it in '88, I don't think it will ever wear out and still sees use.

Best value has been a Montbell down hugger. 8 years old, sees year round use, still as lofted as new (apart from under heels) and must have seen 600+ nights use.

Didnt spend much at all last year. Don't really know, I used to spend £500 every year on a season ticket and never blinked. Once I know kit won't be used again I get rid of it quick.

I had a missus-imposed clearout last year but I had lots of stuff from 1990 in those boxes. (The bivi bag that smelled of curry Supanoodles since forever had to be wrenched from my fist). Stuff that still gets used: I have a Mountain Technology 55cm axe I still use for hill walking that I got in '91. I've never have got round to buying a modern lightweight walking one as instead my pointy stuff budget has gone on technical axes that make the closet look like a Klingon's ancestral weapon vault :). I have a light TNF fleece from 2002 I still use regularly, though the arms are short now as the only place it failed was the elastic on the cuffs so they have moved up over time. I have a Sunnto MC-1(IIRC) from, I think, '88. All the original ink has gone from it apart from the alignment stuff in the bezel. I reapplied markers with luminous paint for each octant decades ago that is still there.

I once survived in Chamonix for some weeks at the end of a trip with only about 20Francs and my tickets home. I was swapping gear for food and gas cartridges towards the end. Are there any bonus points available for negative gear equity?

That's a quality story bumbly. Thanx for sharing.

I always remember brits in the bar Nash eating half eaten plates of leftovers.

Those were the days and don't buy a new axe. Your old one is an extension of Ur arm!

I have a friend who is now a sponsored athlete getting towards the end of his career with all the flashy gear in a certain sport. He used to be able to ask "Have you finished with that?" in a few languages :) He honed his skills with British tourist in the pubs round Hathersage. We used to go in The Little John as their portions were massive and the "soft southern rambler types" would never eat them all. We would sip a half each and he would pounce as soon as he saw people starting to struggle. Absolutely no shame to be found in him. In fact he did it with an air that he was doing them a favour and saving them from being wasteful.

Happy days in cham bumbly.
U may remember those 2 brits coming off N face tour ronde in 80s 1 dying and they managed to drag about 8 or so climbing below with them to their demise and for a while brits again were getting grief all over town
Even chat about prosecution. Thankfully nonsense
We were in chucas bar poncy place wooden chalet with TV,s up and some frogs making comments that got ugly and we ended up smashing place up and went to zermatt next day.
At least I got weisshorn in bag.!

My first season there was '91. I always had good experiences in the Alps but often I didn't have the money for bars, cables or huts and so was around other Brits for the most part. (I've had more ugly issues over the years with locals in the UK. Mainly in N Wales). In later years the French never assume me to be English until I talk as I am quite dark after even just a day out. They have argued the case with me that I am not, even! I also don't carry a tonne of kit giving it away :) Anyways, we probably shouldn't derail Davy's thread but I would guess anyone that has been to Cham has tales of low budget debauchery :)

I used to live in Glossop and pick up Ultrafleeces for next to nothing from the old ME factory shop for friends. It was possible to get colours that never got made other than the sample run. Hands down the best fleece ever for most conditions in the uk. Not too warm for moving fast under a shell and moderately windproof for use without. And they didn't fall apart on contact with rock. I'd certainly buy these if they came back.

Rarely buy now, I think I am about there with ultralight gear, carry 11.5 lb baseweight. Will have to be severely tempted now by some super duper addition. Also I am from Yorkshire and have in the past repaired a carrier bag to continue use.

Yorkshire.... they are even frugal with using full words there. :)

This is my favourite Yorkshire (if you believe the South bit to count)joke, told to me by a vet from Silkstone.

Barnsley man goes to the vet:
Man: "Can yer stop me cat peein' all rahnd t'house?"
Vet: "Is it a tom?"
Man: "Nor, it's in t'basket"

I really rate Ultrafleece too. Had a jacket when it first came out and a mountain jacket that I've still got and a pair of the trousers which still see use in cold weather. I think that the PHD Karisma stuff might be very similar, after all he was Mr ME before he became PHD. It might be worth emailing them, the mountain jacket bears a striking resemblance to my old one.

Yorkshireman goes to Doctor with constipation-given suppositories. Patient calls back a week later as no progress. Doctor says did you put them in the back passage like I told you. Patient says back passage! Cause I did-I put them in the kitchen, in the front room- even outside; for all the good they do I might as well shoved them up my backside.

Don't make me sweat....going cold turkey of buying nice shiny and dull things for outdoors.....I suppose at some point I may have gone a couple of months not buying anything :)

On the lightweight set up my oldest thing would be a permanent match of the original survival aids type (I have replaced the ferro rod on it 4 times and the wick a couple as well) and it is over 25 years old which gets regualr use although I do have a newer version which I got from china which is doing a sterling job in other kits.

My oldest bit of outdoor kit is either a Wade & Butcher "Pioneer" sheath knife which I have inherited from my great Uncle and which dates from around the 1940's or an old leather knife (looks simialr to a butcher knife) from my Granddad which came without a sheath or many markings apart form some sheffield steel marking that i know are on it I am not sure but it could have been his father's so not sure how old it is or how long it has been in the family.
