Travel games.

My daughter, 8yo, has asked for some games to play in the tent while we are camping.

Would you have any recommendations for good travel games? Not just where the game is good but is also light with features that make it hard to knock over the game state or lose bits.

Weight and bulk is pretty important as I'm doing most of the carrying.

At home we tend to play exploding kittens, monopoly, chess, ludo and uno. I have a soft spot for strategy games like diplomacy and risk but we've not gone there yet.

Backgammon.

Can get a mini magnetic version. (Though they aren't great to use if you are a regular player to be honest as the magnets slow down moving the counters, but for a beginner who knows no different...). Or just a small set. Can get a small but not too small folding magnetic board set which has chess board on the outside.

The one I taught my son in a rain bound bothy at 5yrs.
Piece of paper and a pencil. Mark out a grid of dots - any size but the bigger the longer the game. Then take it in turns to join the dots with a line. When you create a square mark it with your initial and that square is yours and you get an extra 'go'. Who ever creates the most squares wins. Plenty strategy and competition.

Also pack of mini playing cards ........

I'm very old school and have a large collection of travel games, but these days I'm aware that you can get apps for scrabble, monopoly etc so no weight at all! Take your pick.
Travel domino sets are lighter than a pack of cards and Maltese Cross or 3s & 5s tests your mental arithmetic. One of my prize possessions is a double 9 domino set with which we play 5s & 7s - much more challenging and up to six can play. Folding cribbage scoring boards are available and that makes 2/3/4 handed cribbage possible with a pack of cards. Cribbage like the more advance domino games combine metal arithmetic with a small degree of strategy.

Good old pack of mini cards.

Whiled away many a happy hour on various trips in a rain bound tent.

Get used to the rules of half a dozen card games for variety.

My 7 tear old has a mini guess who game. I haven't weighed it, maybe 100g and a packet of those top trump card matching game from mcds kids meal we've been taking with us.

We made a fold/roll scrabble board out of a thin plasticky sheet & permanent marker. (similar thickness to a milk jug). Got used plenty in winter camps, airports etc.

I've had this idea for a while and managed to get it done recently. It packs down small and for around 70g it's got:

- ludo
- snakes & ladders
- backgammon
- a version of scrabble ("bananagrams") although I might try to use the snakes & ladders board as a sort of mini scrabble board)
- chess (some slightly weird looking pieces..)
- draughts

I cut up an old washing liquid container to create the tiles and used a Sharpie pen for the letters and designs. The boards are some old stuff I found in our son's arts and crafts box. It looks like very thin CCF and came from The Works. It's great because it's light, rolls our flat, the tiles don't slip around on it and it took a Sharpie pen very nicely. My wife gave me a hand to make a little carry bag from some old ripstop to carry everything.

I reckon this will be good for travelling generally as well as camping trips.
