Read a blog were a fella had fitted caps to the end of his groundhogs so they was easier on the hand to push inn. So thought I'd give it a go. The caps are about £3.40 on eBay and are 1gram per cap. I just melted a small hole either side and threaded them on. Not tried them out yet, but I was curious to make them.

I could have done with these this summer, got up in the night for a pee and opened up my foot on one of my Groundhogs. Hit 40 this year so I was thinking I will purchase myself the obligatory nighttime Nalgene or maybe I could do this mod instead!

One slightly bigger one would be lighter. Bottle top? Move from peg to peg? Crossed my mind as my groundhogs are rough on top & I got a few cuts from pushing them in. Reminds me they need a sanding.

61 now but used a p bottle for decades. As a mostly winter backpacker I never get out of tent unless I have too!

Peg extraction can be another matter if you use the original ruta Locura pegs.
I made something years ago out of a drainpipe bracket but never used it.
We all know the pain of carrying cheap carrier bags 😉

take care of your digits this winter kids 😊

I've tied a wee loop of bright coloured cord around the top of my Ruta Locura cabon Sorex - to help pull them up and also I'd loose them in the deep vegetation otherwise.

Not the most scientific of pictures/tests, but below is the cold water beading test on the various fabrics after a run of Nikwax (tech wash and then TX Direct waterproofer). I really must try and get myself to pop over to the launderettes for drying duties afterwards as using the iron was a long, boring and probably expensive process.20231108_140730.jpg

The walk is hopefully this weekend and we'll probably just go to the northern-most part of the Peaks from our end. In order of what we're looking at.

The Goretex boots by Adidas Terrex (as I write, missus just shouted me that "it's the first time ever you've gotten some nice shoes, make sure you don't dirty them... tramp!!") which I've not tried yet but am confident they'll fit. Goretex seems to be doing it job and the water is still sat on em that I'd spilt.

Green jacket is the Mountain Equipment Axial (exclusive to Trekkit a few years ago) in 400g - that reminds me, I must weigh it to see if the years of treatment has made it heavier - and the other day the back wasn't beading in a long cycling downpour. Still kept me dry though and now it's had a good layer of Nikwax added and ironed. Beading appears to have returned somewhat. Though the problem was mainly on the back that it felt a bit saturated.

Material on that jacket is one of the lighterweight Goretex layers. C-knit I think it was at the time which was slightly heavier than 'active'. Next you are looking at the Montane gifted (well, sold so cheaply that it was like a gift) to us by @cathyjc and for some reason I'm really beginning to think that maybe the eVent is actually much much better than goretex.

I remember having one of my firs waterproof jackets in eVent by Craghoppers and it did an absolutely amazing job. Over 5 years aswell. Hopefully this will fare him well and he'll be mighty impressed (might jot even notice) that I've (re)treated it. Not as much ironing but has spent lots of time on the radiator (well as much as the wife would allow me to run them).

Next and probably my eldest item which I'm desperately trying to make through a few more years. The Rapha Deep Winter gloves. They have an Outdry membrane and I still remember buying them for the Rapha500 - 500km, final week of December, ridden however/wherever you like but in them days it was an outdoor only event. The year before (2016 I think) I did the same ride over 3 days and it was a smelly affair.

I have the NorthFace gauntlet gloves which were waterproof, but totally lacked breathability. Taking them off after an hour period of rain and you'd smell like a dead rat had been unleashed. Very embarrassing. But the Outdry Rapha gloves were a perfect replacement. Primaloft gold (at least 200g each) and full grain leather palms.

So waterproof and warm!! First time I've tried to reproof em as previously I was always worried about ruining. Besides, does Nikwax even work on Outdry (think, Columbia nasty-sheen jackets). Well, I've washed em in the same Techwash and have ironed them - almost ruining as I've left a little sheen in a few spots - beading seems to have returned so now just need to figure out how to properly dry the insides with minimal central heating allowance from the wife!

Oh, and I'll be going to the shed now to grab some leather buff and try to rehydrate the leather palms too. Last time I used that stuff, it left the palms producing lots of black marks after!!

With a bit of judicious bend bodging on a slightly deformed pole section, and a couple of brass eyelets fitted to restrain the porch pole, the geodesic dome tent I won on ebay for 99p is pitched.

Inner is a generous 2.2m x 1.55; just the right size for the 2m x .76m 10cm luxury mats I bought for £50.

Packs up into 2 foot x 9" sausage bag. 4.2kg. Perfect for motorcycle trips to coastal or other exposed locations. Too much for backpacking though. :)

Well pleased with this classic purple palace.

You need a purple Blacks Snowgoose to go with that.

Fell and did this to the elbow of my new hoodie yesterday. Would have replaced the entire sleeve if I had enough of the same fabric.
However, used the wrong colour thread (should've known) and didn't wash the blood off first. Patch sat flat, same fabric and looked good but for the thread colour.

In the end a better solution. Removed the repair, washed all the blood off the inside of the sleeves and ironed it.
Should have done this first.:D
