I think that's a great way of evaluating kit.
If you can combine that with lightweight that's the holy grail.

This purchase hasn't helped my planned foray into Alcohol stoves, but will try when stormin opens honest

Jellified alcohol fuel was mentioned earlier. It had some fancier name but that's what it was, apparently. I wonder if that would make a good anti-covid hand sanitizer? As apparently most the products sold don't contain enough alcohol (it takes 80% to kill a virus, most contain 60-70% at most). But maybe the fact that it's methanol rather than ethanol makes it less effective; and quite likely other aspects of the fuel make it unsuitable. ???

(maybe mods think this belongs in a covid thread, so please move)

Not sure I'd want to clean my hands in methanol, your liver wouldn't appreciate it.

I'd heard 60 - 70% plus was needed? Where did you hear 80%?

Methanol isn't in any official stove fuel anywhere. It's poisonous.

Yep. Methylated Spirits is commonly known as Meths, Denatured Alcohol or Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol), it is a virgin alcohol mixed with a small quantity of Methanol to make it unfit for consumption, and dyed purple.

Hasn't had methanol in for donkeys years.
    Edit: In UK n Europe.

I looked at the ingredients of boots surgical spirit. Surprised to see ethanol and methanol.

Active ingredients: Methyl Salicylate, Diethyl Phthalate, Castor Oil.
    Other ingredients: Ethanol 90%. Methanol 5% w/w.

It's been disallowed in denatured alcohol for fuel for years.

Yup I was surprised to see it listed on a product designed to be used on skin. When I used to hang around drag racing I heard the methanol can get in through your skin.

My great uncle told me during the war he went to concentration camps to interrogate the guards. The prisoners had been making V2 rocket fuel and were drinking it and going blind due to the methanol content.

I wanted to check this as I recall EU rules removed methanol from the denaturing formulation quite some years ago.

And as Rog says, some UK sites still claim methanol is added. I don't think this has been the case since at least 2013.

"CDA is the most heavily denatured alcohol. The standard formulation for CDA produced in the UK is with every 100 parts by volume of alcohol mix 3 parts by volume of isopropyl alcohol, 3 parts by volume of methyl ethyl ketone and one gram of denatonium benzoate."

Bartoline meths which is very commonly sold has no methanol.

Nor does Barretine" mineralised methylated Spirits"
    See data sheet

    Neither does this popular Bioethanol

Yep bulk is best price usually .

Though home bargains were doing it for 99p per 500ml up until recently. It might be £1.50 now. And some camping shops sell the same thing for £4!

I think we (this means me) might be confusing methanol and methylated spirits. They're not the same thing are they?

Surgical spirit, decanted into a suitable small container, is probably the obvious anti-virus agent. At least in the absence of soap and water...

This. Spending way to much on all sorts of gear, it's a joy to be able to make something yourself that work just as well as the store bought stuff.
And the short period waiting for coffee and food is a great way to wind down and enjoy the scenery.

Hangryness can be a real problem, but a snack while waiting usually helps.

Interesting. Can I drink my bioethanol without being poisoned then?

I suggest the 5% of other stuff in it will not be conducive to feeling very happy afterwards....but it may not kill you ;)

    My son's stove n potstand wasn't great.

I realised that my old Myog MSR kettle cone was same diameter, so tried it with the Ali pot but a shallower stove than the cone was designed for (to get correct flame gap).
Side by side boil test with the MSR and Starlyte and it was a minute behind to boil 500ml. (8mins vs 7).

That'll do him I reckon. (all packs nicely inside).

I give up with the image. It kept uploading on its side, so I rotated it beforehand to compensate, and it's still rotated!
