i've just got a bit tempted, but then checked the bill, and right now i can't pull such sum out of the savings.

For me, once you get to that much down, it would be too hot for anything other than Sub-Zero. Which is when I reach for a sleeping bag.

I have a Quilt 350 and 250. I tried the 350 in UK summer mountains and found it too warm most of the time, So I bought the 250 for summer use.

Edit.

Just remembered you linking to the sleeping bag you currently use. And it seems that this quilt would just be a similar spec? Your current bag looks like a better thing for those temperatures.

Subzero is a year round possibility for what i like to do.
right now i'm using -6c comfort (730g of 850 down) sleeping bag year round.

i'm looking for better comfort, i'm set on warmth and spec at this point, and know exactly what i need.

Sounds like you don't need a quilt then.

Do you not intend to do any non deep winter backpacking here whilst in the UK then?

That's what I thought, it's why I looked at the mythic, that's a -5 comfort Vs -9 of the SD, my other SD is -2

Some calculate this differently tho

Tyvek can be used as a bag cover, they already make them that way, but you have a Bristlecone. Why would you want a Tyvek one? Can be quite bulky as well.

Tyvek used for groundsheets (aka hard structure /home wrap) is quite a different thing from tyvek used for bivys (soft structure/clothing grade)

I used to have the Ultralite but stupidly sold it after being sucked into the 110g weight saving of a ZPacks....

But I have restocked (they will see me out) and have....

A Lynx (my God the warmth....)
A Versalite
An Astralite

True they are ****-off expensive, but also as @Rog Tallbloke and others mention, superbly designed and cut for comfort....
You own all 3 off those ? 🤯

Amongst all the exotic, Cottage and Retail bag makers - has anybody come across any Chinese bargains?

A lot of UK retailers do source their products there and ‘same’ products find their way to market.

I bought an Athenaegis (2.25kg weight, 1500g of ‘white goose down’ -20 comfort) for my daughter, thinking the weight might put her off using it… No. She loves it!

I bought a similar version ‘White Wolf’, at one time imported by Station13 which is an inferno.

So it’s pretty easy to stuff a sleeping bag to bulging but has anyone found any options where a more intelligent configuration has been used?

I don't trust chinese specs on a spec based gear. Sourcing equipment brings value to intermediary by conducting QA and warranty.
For example backpack is a backpack, tent is a tent. Only thing that could be measured there is weight and it doesn't affect a performance really. On the other hand in something like a waterproof shell, or a sleeping bag, spec matters alot.

When it comes to Chinese sleeping bag purchases they do make it easier by providing a drop down menu of fill levels..

However, I do understand the issue having been delivered aluminium pegs instead of titanium and them looking nothing similar!

Lofting bags even arrive Alpkit branded 😁

Turns out to be pigeon feathers 🤦🤦🤦

Anyone looking for a good cheap bag please look at the sierra design stuff, good sizes, great loft and all of mine have been 810fill.

Only slight negative is the Sid zip is half length.

A tyvek body suit might work as a vapour barrier, they have them for eur15 at the hardware store in different sizes.
Ifnit doesn't work, it could be used to make pot bags out of the arms and legs.
Adding a smiley, just in case.
😀

There's some fairly cheap vapour barriers on UL outdoors.
