Had a bit of a shock a couple of days back when I tried to use the VR app on the phone......it didn't work at all!
It would seem like the latest VR app update that has been pushed out by OA completely disables it :banghead:
Seems like I now have to download my OS mapping (complete Scotland 50K + some 25K) via the OA app a very time consuming process of selecting a mosaic of areas to download & make sure there’s no gaps........not a happy camper!

Mines disabled. Started to use oa, we'll see how it works out.
I do get the impression, and i might be reading too much into subtle cues, that possibly, they might want me to sign up to a subscription?

You know I was a bit paranoid thinking that the updates might do something to the app when oa wanted to close it, so I haven't updated vr app in quite some time. Was still working fine over the weekend for me.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't trying to get you.

VR worked OK for me last week......perhaps an OA April fools present.

If it was me, I'd throw a bug into the update get people over to OA . So I just assume that a business interested in getting more business would do the same if they could.

Seems ive also managed to fully restore my VR too, even finally remembered the (bloody easy) way to get all my tracks back too.

Blocked all app updates, I did have that previously but I think when I changed phones a wee while back I must have allowed updates in error.

How did you manage it? Easy to do?

As somebody who's not tech savvy at all I can't get my head around how VR will stop working on my phone.
Ok, I know that a bug could crash it, which is maybe what oa done with the updates(?), but if I don't update as I haven't in some time, maybe a year or more, shouldn't it just keep working in my phone depending on how long it takes to naturally crash or whatever?
(whatever the whatever is, a tech savvy person would know :angelic: )

Even if the app is downloaded on your phone and you don't update it, many apps continue to communicate with the server (owned by the company who develops the app), so the company knows if/what app versions are out there and can turn it off remotely. This often happens even unintentionally when the systems are updated to work a bit differently and the old version of the app becomes incompatible with the new version of the system. Sometimes old versions are remotely disabled due to security issues.

If your app works without communicating anything to the service company, then you might be able to keep the app working for now, especially if you keep your phone offline (airplane mode) preventing the communication back to the 'base'.

I have, allow background data usage switch off, as I never seen the reason to have that switched on for vr, don't know if that makes any difference?

Background data usage/refresh means that the app only connects / runs when you use it, not in the background. With email app for example, it'd only fetch the emails when you open the app, but as soon as you open it, it will connect email provider and most likely the app developer.

This is a good way to save data & battery with apps that you don't need realtime updates from.

Any apps* or websites even, where you can plan (or record) a route and then do a 3d fly through (downloadable). Want something to add to a project I'm messing with. OS mapping would be ideal but not a deal breaker

Couldn't do what I wanted.

Used a work around, just used screen record and followed the route that way, a bit jittery having to change swipe fingers every time I got to the edge of the screen, but it will have to do, might be able to edit the jitters out

I have been testing the Memory-Map 4 All beta on my Mac and the iOS version via TestFlight on my phone and iPad.
The app is a universal app that will also be the same for Android and Windows.
I paid for a years subscription to OS maps - 1:25k and 1:50k so I could use the app fully and test it out properly.
So far it’s very promising. It has active navigation and you can customise up to 4 ‘pages’ or screen to show a combination of maps, navigation information etc. the active navigation is very good and responsive. The page options mean you can have maps at different scales on different pages or even have two maps on the same screen; one could be an overview 1:50k and the other a more detailed 1:25k. Lots of other information to tinker with.
I have sent some feedback to developers already but it’s about 70% of the way there for me to be a replacement for all my mapping apps.
