My Brew Kit ..thread for your stove set up

Does anybody use the Calder keg set up? Any good?
I do sometimes. I assume you're only considering it for boiling water, in which case it works well - though I use it with a Speedster burner, which I think suits a Keg better than the 12:10 burner.
The problem is packing it since it need a lot more protection than more robust systems.

Thanks William. That had crossed my mind the more I thought about it. Yes I am thinking of boiling water only. I'm looking at a smaller set up for summer weekenders. Other than alu pots I've only ever used a titan 850L but I find a bit bulky at times and don't need that volume, certainly not in summer. I don't want to baby my pot nor have to use the caddy, so probably will look else where..

Earlier in the thread, I posted our choices (including the Keg). They all include two drinking mugs of some sort, in addition to the mug/pot for boiling water.
The first one is the one we use most; the plastic mugs slip over the top of the cone sticking out of the ti pot for packing, which means it doesn't need too much care. It packs a little smaller than the first set up as the cone is shorter. In fact, I sometimes use the cone with the first set up plus a silicone band to position the pot so that it packs smaller.
The second set up is a special order cone, sized to fit in the 750ml mug so that it is bomb proof when packed.
Third is the Keg, and you want to avoid crushing it.

I think the keg ( or any beer can set up) is an example of old school SUL ingenuity, but is really in the realms of "stupid light" due to the ease of denting. Especially when there are now plenty of more compact titanium options almost as light.

There are quite a few examples earlier in this thread.

I have 3 small solo options currently. :sorry:
All use alcohol wick burners like speedster/Kojin/homemade or esbit.

Toaks 550 light, Homemade CP Cone, fits a small Wildo Fold a Cup inside with everything else, or a Large Fold a cup outside.

Evernew 400, with homemade Ti windshield, spoke pot-stand,foil lid and plastic sip lid.

Evernew 570 with Trail Designs Sidewinder Cone

I had a Toaks 650 set too, but gave to a friend.

I've enjoyed this thread, I do like stoves. I used a home made alu windshield with speedster stove and pot stand for a while. I like the minimal set up but not so keen on the speedster stove. I find it quite fragile, well the lid at least. I use the stormin (RIP) alu cone and his stove which I really like. Works every time and stove is robust, fits in stove, though the alu cone is prone to kinks and dinks around the lip and folds. Im sure that I will finally cave in and get the sidewinder and evernew combo!

Oh the ev 570 mole. See it has a special lid you can buy, but quite expensive set up if you buy both. No doubt I will buy pot first and drag my feet buying cone, will probably try some DIY stuff first. Efficiency is not really important for what I do.

I made one, then bought the proper lid. Which is a bit OTT really. I got mine via plazajapan.

Tbh if you want simple and compact for summer I'd go for the Toaks. Cheaper and includes a lid. You can get a cone from Trail designs that fits both the Toaks 550 lite or the EN400.
There are even cheaper pots about now on AliExpress, but they are heavier. (Still light though)

It may be more complex than one genuine and one easily distinguishable fake. For example, there is mention on BPL of a fake which is lighter than the genuine stove.
This has come up on many BPL threads, but this thread is a good place to start. It may be more information than many will be bothered with, but page 5 of the thread could be a useful short cut.
@Rmr there is mention on another BPL thread of sputtering caused by dirt under the jet of the stove.

The fakes don't have Titanium arms holding the pots, so they can collapse when they get hot...And that is probably what they are referring to in the thread you mentioned...This video shows what to expect with a genuine BRS3000T: Pushing a BRS-3000T Stove to Its BREAKING POINT!! - YouTube

The one I had a problem with was brand new,I was just testing it with different pots, it was definitely a fake.

Hello,

can anyone give me some advice?
I wanted to buy a stormin cone for my Toaks 650 ml, but, as you all know by now, it is not possible anymore.

Is there anyone who could make these? Is it possible to buy something simillar in UK/EU?
Thank you!

Were you wanting Titanium or Aluminium?
I have some Ti sheet stock at the moment that might do the job. DM me.

If you decide against making a cone I'd recommend going to Trail Designs, who developed the Caldera Cone / Sidewinder etc. I know they are based in the US, but they are very helpful and have a high quality product

You could give HMG in France a shout as they sell Caldera cones although stocks are low and they only have cones for the Toaks 550 at the moment (if you search for Trail Designs you can find Sidewinder and Ti-Tri + Inferno but they are also out of stock).

Edit: Winwood Outdoors in the UK also sells TD cones although stocks are also very low. They are apparently no longer in business, see WilliamC's and Mole's comments below.
