Hello from Oxford

Greetings everyone :)

I'm not old, but also not as young as I used to be! Heavy boots and packs make me feel so tired... I have an ongoing project to upgrade my kit.

Many years ago when I *was* young, I did the Dales Way with a friend, with early 90s camping gear. Our packs were huge and weighed a ton, we staggered along at about 0.5mph. And we were constantly humiliated by lightly-packed grey-haired older people, overtaking us. "How come?" we said - "Oh - they're B&Bing it - we can't afford that!"

Now that I am older B&Bing it is no longer out of reach financially, I have done the first few sections of the Pennine Way that way - mainly for the weight saving rather than the creature comforts (though that's nice of course). But it is expensive and you have to book everything in advance - it's not really the "freedom of the hills", which I love.

Looking forward to many useful discussions here :)

Forgot to ask if you think that advice on here will be cheaper than B&B's, only joking. Enjoy the forum Sara.

Ask away, I've just completed my section 4 (out of 5) of the PW, Dufton to Housesteads (Hadrians Wall) camping all the way mostly 'wild'.

Hello from a now lapsed Oxford resident.

I used to run a bar/restaurant on George Street / Gloucester green and lived down in Jericho Riverside.
I loved having portmeadow literally on my doorstep and had the Oxford canal running down one side of my house and the Thames was just across the meadow for evening dips and strolls.

Welcome to the site and hope it helps you lighten your pack :)

Thank you all for the welcomes!

Taz, much admiration for that. Hopefully I will get to try it soon. I've only done a bit of wild camping, in NW Scotland where it's remote and wild camping as actually legal. And I still felt oddly guilty about it, as if "this can't really be allowed, surely"? Obviously it's a psychological barrier I will have to learn to overcome!

JKM, yes that's the best part of Oxford, it's very beautiful there. I used to walk along the canal on my way to work, and I miss it...

Hi Sara and welcome. We are a broad church here - I am more a hiker than a camper but always carry some minimalist shelter for freedom and flexibility (I normally don't book anything since I only ever have rough plans and mostly make a route up as I go along). UL kit makes that possible and most importantly - enjoyable :)
