Come and say Hello

Hello from Virginia USA! But I need to hike there someday!
Another old guy. I'm 70, been backpacking around the Mid Atlantic area for 50+ years. Mostly solo. I am not a UL type, but near to it. I hike to photograph, so I have a bit of extra kit for that. Hike mostly solo. I kind need to let the wind blow in one ear and out the other as often as I can. Just wish the wind didn't whistle so much when I turn my head....
Long time user of Tarptent Scarp1, and just purchased a Moment 1. I'll post a review here after I've used it for a bit.
If you're interested in seeing some of the areas I hike in,I have a Flickr account search for Va3pinner.

I must say I like this forum. Interesting for me to read about how you handle the conditions there. Where I hike, it is heavily forested, summer heat and humidity can be brutal, so I need to prepare a bit differently. Already learning things, and that is the best part of a forum.
Happy Trails!

Hi everyone. I’m based in Rutland, UK, and getting back into hiking after many years working abroad. Now the wrong side of 50 but excited about combining passions for birding, photography, the great outdoors … and wine? Preparing for a Knoydart trip with (experienced hiker) friends next weekend, my luxury items will be a tiny can of S. African Cab Sauv / Syrah and a knee brace!

Welcome to the forum - perhaps consider switching from wine to brandy (which is, after all, distilled wine) or some other hard liquor of your choice - that way, you carry more alcohol for less weight!

Hi Everyone , joined the forum a while back have hovered in the background and commented on a few posts and bought and sold some kit. I also followed the make your own Caldera cone posts and successfully made a cone .
Like many others I’ve never formally introduced myself, but now feel more confident to make that step.
I live in Staffordshire close to Cannock Chase . I’ve always been an outdoor person, my initial interest started via “Scouting” My interests include , day walking, multi day trips , Wild camping etc.........
I stopped full time working in 2020 due to health issue and now only work part time so technically I am semi retired.
I now have the time to enjoy more wild camping and multi day trips however as someone with epilepsy it can pose some challenges, as I’ve found on a recent two night walk on the Anglesey coastal path.
Ideally I am looking to meet and join like minded people to allow me to get outdoors and explore safely,I have my own transport and am prepared to travel

Backpacker
Hi I am Ilovewalking and I live on the outskirts of Snowdonia in North Wales. I have always camped and often backpacked but I only started long distance paths when I retired. I try to do 2 a year and have now completed 10 multi day walks, my last 4 were The South Downs Way, The West Highland Way, The Dales Way and the Northumberland Cost Path. I carry a pack weighing between 7k and 8.5k. I have been using a Tarptent Stratospire 1 which I have been very pleased with and it has never let me down. I only camp in camp sites, not wild camping, if no camp site available I use YHA accomodation or B&B but I prefer to camp if I can. I meet very few people who are also backpacking on long distance path, so I am very pleased to have found this site. Thank you for letting me join.

Hello I'm very new here aswell, everyone is very helpful, and Cuprajake buys everything and tests it for us all so we don't have too.

Hello quite an achievement well done and congratulations raising all that money.

What was your highlight of the adventure and any funny stories or encounters?
The highlight without a doubt was the wonderful people of Britain! As well as donating so much money, I had so many breakfasts, pints, diners, cups of tea bought for me and free campsites and wonderful conversations.

I lost 11kg in bodyweight, (about the same as my full rucksack!), was stung by 1 wasp, twisted 1 ankle, had 2 blisters was hit by 1 car and 1 mobility scooter, fell down 1 forty foot slope, rescued several hundred earthworms, 1 hedgehog, one mole, two sheep and one toad.

It was 5% horrible, 70% hard trudge and 25% pure, in the moment joy. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to do this and humbled by the kindness i was shown throughout the journey.

It was a blast!
