Back in Pack app

I thought I set up a thread for the users / testers for this app to share experiences.

@Back in Pack hopefully this is ok with you?

Question: I think you mentioned the ability to do list (.csv?) imports? Is that coming soon or did I just miss is in the app?

Here is the link to the latest version on the App Store:
If you are feeling brave, then you can sign-up for the latest beta test version using TestFlight App:

I am way behind on getting the support videos recorded, edited and uploaded so I will endeavour to answer questions here as they come up, as the app has a lot of functionality.

I installed Beta, but I don't see a import option?

I have such a long list in lighterpack that I'd rather import that, so I can start properly testing.

Yes there is - it is not in obvious location, as it was really as an emergency back up and restore, but the app will load a csv if it is in the correct format

Settings >> Switch on 'Show Advanced Utilities' >> Select 'Backup/Restore Gear Locker >> Select 'Restore Gear Contents'

The app will prompt for a zip file. It must contain a file called 'GearLockerIndex.csv' with a specific format.
Here is example a link to an example.

For type 0=Base, 1= Worn, 2=Consumed. Other than that, hopefully fairly straightforward. The Optional("") is required around text fields to ensure that the content is recognised correctly, as there may be special characters or commas in the text!

You can just import lists directly from lighter pack - the app will add the gear to the locker (and attempt to recognise if the item is already in the locker from a previous list) and it will then create the packs and add all the gear items.

1. Get the 'Share url' - make sure you have all the display options switched on in Lighterpack
2. In the app, go to Settings >> Import Lighterpack.
3. Paste the URL and Go>
4. Wait a little bit as it is not super quick. Note: If you import multiple lists, then there may be differences in the number of items extracted from lighter pack, vs items created in the app, as this is where an item is shared across packs and the app will not create a duplicate.

In the Lighterpack list you sent me, the gear items are in a category called 'nothing/blank'. Had not come across this scenario before.

Can you rename the category 'Other' and it should import.

FIXED for next build: I will need make an enhancement list to detect if there is no category name add to an 'Other' category

In the Lighterpack list you sent me, the gear items are not in any categories, which the import routine requires.

Do you have a single category and named it blank or space? If so can you rename it 'Other' and it should import

I haven't set up any categories yet, what I thought I do is just import all the gear and then sort them out.

Set up other category and import is successful. There's a small font issue on M1 Mac, App 1.1 (0637)

I think these two could do with a black font and on the same level as the header. Also the the arrow icon looks a lot like Share icon (arrow out of a box) which tricks my mind every time. Maybe use the word 'Add' instead?

Will need to investigate this - it seems to be a glitch specific to the Mac implementation of the iPad controls. On the iPhone and iPad, your item displays ok. This will likely be the same on all description and notes fields as it is the same object. I will see if anyone has a workaround for this

Good to get some feedback.
I have fixed the colours - it will be in the next build version.

Will look at the icons in a subsequent release. M.

So I've created my own categories etc. How do I delete a category or an item?
iPad/iPhone controls for lists.
swipe left to delete an item in the locker or the category list (you cannot delete categories with attached items)
swipe right to duplicate items and packs
swipe right to set default categories, currencies

Nice. It's not obvious when using the app on Mac, even when I have some other apps that work the same way on Mac.

Is there a way to automatically sort the items on the list under a category? It would help to find out dupes etc? Now it seems to be in the order when added.

Bug:

Screenshot 2023-03-06 at 21.45.34.jpg

I added these items when the category was 'Clothing (carried)' and then changed the name of the category to 'Clothes'. The items remained in the 'Clothing (carried)' selection, even though the items were showing 'Clothes'.

Screenshot 2023-03-06 at 21.47.27.jpg

The only way to fix this was to change the item category to something else and then change it back to 'Clothes' and that moved the item from 'Clothing (carried)' to 'Clothes'.

Yes - this is a display bug in the locker list view. something has changed. category names are dynamic on the packs view but no longer on the locker view.

>> I think for general usability questions, then here is a good forum as they may be applicable to others.

For specific bugs, can you log issues on the Helpdesk -I know it is a pain, but allows me to keep track of issues raised by different people, code versions, fix versions, root causes etc..

Otherwise the forum will be full of technical stuff, that is not relevant to most people

thanks

I'll do that to bugs.

Couple of usability bits. It would be good to be able to set a number of items to 0. I do this in Lighterpack when testing different combinations, having say 4 pieces of rain gear listed on a pack, but have couple of them listed as 0 items, which means I can see them and play around with them, but they don't add to the weight.

Sign into iCloud on both devices and run the app - the data should sync.

Using Testflight on both Mac & iPhone and I haven't received a request to access iCloud etc. I think the Testflight app is sandboxed unless explicitly access has been requested.

I can open a bug report?

TestFlight uses the live/production data model.
If you are signed into your iCloud account on your Mac/iPhone (system preferences on each device) then the app will not prompt.
