Some of you will know Alan Sloman either personally or through his blog https://alansloman.blogspot.com/

Sadly Alan passed away this morning having been seriously ill for some months. I accompanied Alan on several backpacking trips and part of his 2018 TGO Challenge. Alan was TGO Challenge legend having completed 26 Challenges. He also did LEJOG in 2007. You can read about his walks on his blog.

Robin, I was so sad to hearing of the passing of your friend. I never met Alan and the one chance I had was fleeting. I was eating fish and chips in Braemar in 2022 with Jurai and Carl (of 50 Munros in a crossing fame) when he walked past over the road. No amount of persuasion or offers of chips got him to come over. I feel incredibly sad having never met him, you must be in bits. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thanks. End of an era. We also went to Lord’s a couple of times to watch the cricket. Cliche, but they threw away the mould after they made Alan. It was particularly sad that he had to drop out of this year’s Challenge.

Sad news indeed, I only met Alan a couple of times on the TGO, in the Fife Arms in 2012 and in the Alexandra in Ballater this year.
I enjoyed his writing and found his blogs useful and entertaining, a real Challenge legend by all accounts.

RIP Alan, I knew he had health issues years back, assumed he'd got through it

met him on a couple of occasions, he used to comment often on my TGO blogs when I did them. I should have once detoured off the top of Bynack More to one of his cheese and wine parties, rather than tough it through horrendous wind and rain, bumped into most of the party goers the next morning in Glen Avon/Glen Bulig, they were all fresher than me. Think the last time I spoke to him would have been a rowdy night in the Alex in Ballater.

I'm pretty sure it was an online copy of Alan's TGO planning sheet I used to fill my own in the 1st time when I didn't actually know what I was doing😀

It was very windy that day although the rain wasn’t as bad as it might have been. I was in the Cairngorm Hotel that night but I ate out with another couple of Challengers. I went straight back to my room after.

My tribute to Alan

He will always still be there for you.

I do hope that someone preserves his blog. I found it to be the most valuable TGO Challenge resource and it would be a real shame for it to be lost.

It’s on Google blogger so I imagine it won‘t be deleted. It was a shame that Andy Howell’s blog was deleted but he had his own web domain.
