(Very) late update on this.
@Bopdude kindly sent me an old blocked BeFree filter and detaching the filter from the cap was surprisingly easy; just a firm push.
I tried it on a Cnoc Vecto 42mm bladder and the thread seemed quite a poor fit. When I tested it, I was not surprised to see it leaked a bit, enough for it not to be fit for purpose. I did wonder if this was an old BeFree filter and the thread was not compatible with a new Cnoc Vecto I had? - I assume people are using the BeFree filter/Cnoc combo without issue?
I've recently bought a Hydrapak Seeker 42mm with their version of the BeFree style filter.
The BeFree cap fits much better on this...
There is a very slight leak takes 3-4mins to appear and is a couple of drips per minute. Slow enough to still make it functional, i wouldn't have a problem in using it to collect camp water and carrying it for a while, but certainly wouldn't leave it lying down in the inner tent. Forcing water through the Sawyer Mini didn't increase the leak rate.
Maybe a newer BeFree filter would be a better fit on the Hydrapak bladders too?
On Ebay there is a non-UK seller making 3D printer 42mm->28mm adapters (states Hydrapak to Sawyer Squeeze, and wont work on the Mini - why?...). From what I understand it would be very difficult to get a 42mm adapter that works on all bottle makes(Hydro, Cnoc, BeFree etc) as they can all have slightly different thread pitches. Anything made on a 3D printer would have to be food grade safe, and many plastics are no longer food grade once they've been through a 3D printer.
In areas with peaty/discoloured water which might prematurely block the Hydrapak filter, I'll be leaving it behind and using the bladder with the Sawyer Mini. I'll probably just get the official Hydrapak adapter set to make this leak free.
