£20 to wild camp?

The Gendarms picked us up the night before in a big van with machine guns clipped inside the roof and dropped us off where the other 49 tents were pitched. It would have been a bit scary but we were at that stage of life when you think you are invincible.

I'd suggest they **** off
They can try their luck.,.
Ironically much of my disregard for rules stems from time living in France :D

Even if they've got a gun??

Now that is BIG talk.

But I don't really know how often landowners really do get @rsey with wildcampers??

Or even know they're there.

Mostly they're indoors, in the warm, watching the telly, and eating their tea, like normal people ..

Not scouring the fell for supposed miscreants - - strikes me as all a bit over egged..

Just out of interest, how many folks here have actually been chased off, by an irate farmer when wildcamping in the UKs more remote country?

Assuming we've been behaving in a reasonable manner?

Being moved on from a rave doesn't count.

Around where I live the issue might be gamekeepers out lamping for foxes who might spot you and chase you off.

This evening a parakeet flew into my window, stunned itself, fell to the ground, and was instantly eaten by a baby fox. Such is the state of invasive species in inner London.

Might, but actual, UK occurances??

Yep. Me and a chap called Tim on OM meet many years ago.
We'd camped in thick forest in East Sussex. Standing idly chatting at dusk we noticed there was actually three of us. We'd been joined by a bloke in full ghillie suit and with a rather large gun.

He asked if we'd seen the 'Deer culling in progress' signs. No we confessed.

We could stay for the night as our scent had ruined the nights culling but must move on in the morning.
He was actually very decent about it and even showed us his gun:)

40 years ago I camped in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. At 6am a team of Gendarms came through the area where we were camping with maybe 50 other tents. We were women by a Gendarm banging on a tent pole with a gun. Never packed up and moved on so fast. The point is if you are wild camping and someone who appears to have some authority tells you to move on you're unlikely to argue.
I had a similar experience in Italy - in the woods above Portofino, I think - except they just said we must be gone in the morning. They came back the next day and said it again.

I used to stay at a reasonable camp site in the Bois de Boulogne. It can't have been very expensive because I was always skint in the those days (early 80s).

That's leafy suburbia for you, right there...
all "Nature red. in tooth and claw"

It's a fox eat parakeet world, I'm afraid. :blackeye:
.
. but have the verbascum flowered yet?

How thrilling :)

And he showed you his gun :x3:

.. but was actually rather decent about it.

For a moment there, I thought you said he was wearing a gorilla suit.. That would have been even better :dude:

Edit... Does a rendezvous with one other guy off of the Internet in the local woods, really comprise 'an OM meet'
You sure it wasn't a 'butchcrafting' thing :geek:

A chap with a mahoosive rifle, and an infra red nightscope picked off nine foxes at our place, a few years back.
He showed me his gun too..

That's what that foreign travel, to 'Abroad-land' can do to people -

-Probs shouldn't be allowed

But then again, some of us seem to have been born, as fully formed members of 'The Awkward Squad' :angelic:

Have you ever had any run-ins with grumpy UK farmers, objecting to your wildcamping @Balagan??

Does anyone realistically give a toot if you pitch yer silnylon structure on some remote bit of Lakeland mountainside? Probably not. But start rigging yer cuben fibre contraption outside Farmer Palmer’s cowshed, then you might be on dodgy ground.

Has anyone here been kicked off an English / Welsh mountainside for wildcamping?

The proposed North Wales ban on brightly coloured tents above 2000ft seems interesting, I’ll try and find a link...

The area South West of Loweswater has some online reputation of a farmer who won't allow wild camping in the hills. Iirc "you can't camp here", "why?", "Cos it's my f!!!! land!"

And here I had a similar experience walking solo at Floutern Tarn around 5pm. Two quad bikers approached me but we're on the other side of the fence. The riders stopped and sat watching, but I walked around the Tarn and started to traverse the boulders up to Great Borne. They watched me until I was about quarter of the way up and then rode off. I never thought anything of it until finding it online months later.

They weren't there to see me descend Great Borne later and camp on Blake Fell...:angelic: (how wild I am...)

I've pitched up in the Peak, and sat around when the Gamekeeper was on fox patrol, he then wished us a good night and headed off.

once in the Peak and once in Scotland - We have been woken in the night/early morning as the Mountain Rescue went by on a call, and been asked if we had seen said person.

But never had anyone in a capacity to move me on when up high. The only issue I could see would be low level on farming land.

And if you bother to talk to Farmer Palmer first - you may find that she or he has no real objections to you parking y'self over night.

they might be a bit taken aback otherwise - just as anyone would if they found someone camping in their garden..

No-one seems to have come forward with a scarey farmer story yet - so we might assume its not so very common..

Whilst I wouldn't disagree with the principle:angelic::wink:
I wonder how they'd ever police that?

And how are they going to define bright ?? are they going to have colour charts?? like in paint shops??

I'd love to be in on the conversation -

"i'm sorry madam you'll have to move lower - this tent qualifies as crimson"

"Oh but officer - it was sold to me as burnt umber - the manufacturers spec said it was approved for deployment upon the hillsides of Cymru - sob"
