Since Photobucket is not free any longer, you can use FaceBook.
Upload a photo there , set it to Me Only .
Then click on the photo so that it opens on a larger window and right click on it ad chose Copy Image address , then paste that into the image url here.

Is setting to Me Only a necessary part of the process for it to work or just a personal privacy preference?

I'm guessing that its because maybe FB friends might wonder why one is posting a close up of a Cuben fibre pochette for example : ). trip pics might be a bit different, but a plethora of tech shots to illustrate a point might make your friends reach for the unfollow button.
Good tip though, I haven't set up a photo sharing account so not posted any pics before.

I couldn't get this to work (privacy set to friends) because I couldn't get an option to copy image address (perhaps because I'm on a tablet not pc) but I did get an option to open the image in a new tab, which I did and pasted the tabs url into the image url. Is the photo above visible to people who aren't my FB friends?

Since I keep everything on FB to its most stringent privacy settings I prefer to use Flikr or Google Photos...both free, both offer an insane amount of storage

I use Flickr at the moment too, but after Photobucket's recent shenanigans it's nice to have other options. And from Franco's post it seems you can do it while keeping your FB privacy settings tight.

I think Facebook will soon clamp down on this if too many people start doing it, the extra throughput given some sites could be huge ?

yes I can see it and more importantly its just (a nice) embedded picture in the post - nothing on there creates a link to a facebook page or allows throughput to Facebook.

@Bopdude I get no image but a link to a Facebook page that says "The page you requested cannot be displayed at the moment. It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may be broken or expired, or you may not have permission to view this page."

Facebook may be monetarily free, but you pay with your soul. :)

I'm sticking with Flickr and TBH, if they start charging for all access, then I'll pay.

FB compresses images a lot, if you care about that.

[IMG]I open the larger window for the photo then drag the photo here, same thing really.
(few years ago in the Dartry's, what a mess, some things never change :))

The ME ONLY is simply because some photos posted here would not interest anybody else.
BTW, I see the first photo William C posted in 3 D . Great shot !!!
