@edh I can't reply to your TGO survey thread because the thread is closed, so I'm asking here.
How do you define "in events like the TGO Challenge"? Events that involve a number of participants with common criteria? Events where the participant has to create their own route? Events with a minimum distance/time?
I'm willing to help but I don't know if I fit the definition.

Thanks William. And for posting the thread.

You do...really anything that constitutes overnight or longer backpacking trips.

TGO is the main focus but a broader pool of survey material would be very welcome.

We want to collate as much info as possible on the use of technology in backpacking.

Ok I’ve filled it in @edh, but I’ve put in data for my Lakes trips: I hope that’s still useful.

    Otherwise, sorry!

    It is, thank you.

We have lots of ways we can look at the data we get.

    likewise; non-TGO responses submitted.

After all, any good study needs some data to test the cr*p filters you apply ;-)

Good luck. will be interested to read your results as and when.

    Thanks; the more the merrier.

We will share the results at some point; it will take a while as our fieldwork in May will generate a lot of data.

The Survey is here in case it was missed.

by fieldwork, I wonder if you mean: You get to go camping and your student(s) stay behind and play with a database? :D

    how rude

    But yep; that's it :D

Seriously (there's a first time)...no students, my colleagues do all the heavy lifting!

Some interesting results already - we were just discussing it.

    Keep it coming

I'll put a link on here to publications; it will be a while.... such is the nature of academic work.

As feedback I'd like to mention that I found it hard to decide what to answer for experience as I was unsure what to relate it to. It seems you're going to get very subjective answers to that one.

Yes; it is the 'price' paid in opening it up a bit to get a greater range of responses. As it is largely a qualitative study there are degrees of interpretative freedom, such is the medium.

To whit: I guess I think I am an experienced backpacker, yet still make basic 'mistakes' often; it is as you note subjective.

Anyway...back to the Chicken Cacciatora (the recipe of which according to Mrs Ed, has no degrees of freedom whatsoever).

    IMO
Experience = having made a lot of mistakes
    Incompetence = repeating them

    I reckon I'm an experienced incompetent :)

With experience comes complacency, with complacency comes carelessness...and you find you didn't pack any spare knickers...:sorry:

 well, no knickers is the way to go...
For me I hasten to add...

A few years ago there was a thread on the TGO Challenge message board about pack weights and gear lists where a well known male Challenger (I won’t name him) revealed that he was packing six pairs of undies in his pack for that year’s Challenge. Not only that, he was using ladies underwear because they were lighter (his base weight was 16kg). Needless to say this caused considerable hilarity and leg pulling.

A sincere 'Thank you' to Rich for letting us use the forum for our study - and to DaveV and Rich for helping us with the survey posts; greatly appreciated.

The response has been stunningly good for research of this nature and warrants a further big Thank you to all who contributed.

    The survey is still open.

We are moving very shortly to inviting people to join us for the next stage during the TGO Challenge 2019.

Just a 'head's up' that we posted invitations to the second stage of this research today; so if you were interested - and on the TGO this year - check your home inbox.

Again, thanks for a great response to the initial survey.
