Tarp Poles

Well my ankle seems well and truly screwed again (Thanks Amsterdam Paving). So I'm gonna have to put off all my hiking plans for the summer. Instead I'm going to concentrate on bike adventures. This means I'm gonna need some tarp poles, rather than carrying walking poles on the bike to use as tarp poles.

What do people recommend for ultra light, yet strong enough poles for use with a tarp (think A frame pitching). ?

Ideally I need about 900-1000mm of height, and if they broke down into 3 sections so they are under about 400mm each, that would be ideal (tho not a deal breaker if 2 section).

Any suggestions?

I've got a Hex pole that breaks down into sections, but I'd have to measure them...

I use carbon fibre golf club shaft sections. They taper, so if you cut then to the right length, one simply jams into another. The two I cut for the front end of my Golite hut 1 differ in length by 4", which enables a choice between high & airy, and ground hugging pitches depending which section you jam into which. Fine for a single pole support, probably overkill for an A frame weight-wise. You can pick these up on ebay, or find a golf club shop which does repairs and blag some with broken ends for free.

Why not just source one pole and use the bike as the other pole Julia? Half the weight and bulk before you start.

because then I can't pitch on a campsite, and still use the bike to nip to the pub

The bike is also likely to be locked to something, which then dictates where you can camp...

Nice idea, but doesn't fit my use case.

I've a few of their aluminium poles and they're well made. the 110cm pole does a good job with most smallish tarps.

ah, excellent. Don't suppose you have the weight for a 1100mm ali pole? I can't find it on their website with my mobile browser.

That's more the sort of diameter I'd prefer to use. 10.25mm seems a bit spindly.
