Shelters for tall folk

I don't understand why folk here are saying the Cricket is a Solomid XL with a beak instead of a door.

I know that's what the MLD site says, but the Solomid dimensions are given as 285 X 137 and the Cricket dimensions as 230 X 102 (rear seam x side edge).

What am I missing here?
There was something on the MLD site a while ago about it and apparently they'd changes the design from what it was before... most likely it's yet another dimension error.

The Cricket was updated in 2017 and the side and back panels are the same as those used on the XL

im 6'4" (so not that tall after all) and found the duomid with ali inner too cramped when away for 6 weeks last year. i ended up using the inner when it was wet or cold only- the inner sloping walls were too claustrophobic, pressing against my nose and toes...:bag: . as a tarp only option it was fine. but i like inners so sold it. :bla:
What did you replace it with Paul?

Was it a duomid or duomid XL?

Do you ever have the inner pressing against the outer?
I've been using a lightweight breathable bivvy but no my head and feet are far enough away from the ends that an inner wouldn't touch the outer. I wouldn't be happy with a taut inner pressing against my head and compressing the foot area of my quilt though.

Would you not recommend getting the inner then? Do you not use a inner during the summer months? What about the midges?

I honestly don't know. I've never looked at the dimensions so don't know how well you'll fit. If theres a 10cm gap all around I don't think you'll touch it though, 20cm you probably will. I don't get out overnight an awful lot during the summer, and when I do it tends to be local and hammocking.

What are people’s rhoughts on the HMG echo 2. It’s internal length is 7’ with a 8.5’ tarp. Maybe this is a suitable option?

After speaking on the phone with Ron from MLD he said that a duomid XL with solomid innner would work and that the inner certainty wouldn’t touch the outer even with thick sleeping pad and winter bag.

That sounds about right. You'll touch the inner, but the inner should stay clear of the outer. Beware import charges and the dreaded VAT making the final bill quite a chunk higher than you expected.

You'll be rubbing your knees on the underside when you draw them up. It's very low and svelte. Looks nice though. Mark at Trekkertent is bulding more cuben stuff these days, and you'd avoid import duties and VAT with him.

With A frame tarps it's a pain (imo) squeezing past the pole to get in. If you're going to carry a pole for the rear and double pole the front, If possible then that'll work better.

Something a little different from the mid type tent... and something I've just seen (its new out I think) is the Robens Swift tarp tent. Its a bit dear at £300 - although 20% off at Blacks (£240) It would avoid the feet and head issues. Whilst its not got an inner, its something that could be added cheaply at a later date. I have a bug nest that would easily fit something like that set up.

Video of the tent on Robens.de website.

Not sure of the actual pros and cons of this type of tent - but its maybe something worth considering?

"100 inches long"

Errm... Well, OK, it has 8" bathtub sides. But being a "single/double wall hybrid", I'd expect some condensation issues around my quilt footbox with this one.

Do you think there are better alternatives which will suit my needs? I’ve messaged Colin ibbotson to see if I can join the waiting list for one of his custom designs.

Ahh, I didn't know there were problems. Victims of their own success I'll bet. I've got some Cuben and I'll have a go at making my own I think.
