In the vague hope that we will be able to backpack somewhere sometime...I'm thinking/hoping Scotland....

As with many I find midges a tad vexing....so am thinking of garb...

Head: BB cap with 24g midge net to hand
Torso and arms: LS Arc top (my year round wear). Sun mitts.
Legs: Arc shorts. Arc SL Phase tights.

Never tried the Beatons jackets etc?

A modicum of Picardin based repellant....

Note; I very seldom backpack in Scotland in the summer...so

A Beatons is a must for me but I am a bit of a wuss, more so on lower valley camps, thin liner gloves too on occasion.

Clothing and inners/bivvy treated with permethrin, mainly for ticks

Apart from that not much really, perhaps a prayer for plenty of sunshine and a 5mph + breeze

I perfected smoking with a headnet on (when I smoked) actually it was midges that started me smoking when I was an apprentice keeper in glenesk:D

My normal midge dress is very similar, sea to summit micro net, long sleeve t, Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily or arcteryx cormac and Arc lefroys. I usually just put cream on my hands.

Ed, have you been to NZ? Wondering how the midges compare to the sandies there? Picaridan 20% only applied on exposed skin works a treat for sandies in NZ.

Like Charlie, my regime doesn't alter much. Im far more wary of Ticks than midges..Midges (despite being annoying) cause no lasting problems. Long sleeve top with hood, long trousers, insect repellent on the hands, chuddy, neck and face keep me untroubled for most of the time. Keeping moving and staying in a breeze if possible is key, they cant fly very fast.
I spray my face with the head net on, it does both at the same time.

Do you react to them badly Ed? As do I.
Or are you one of the lucky ones, like my youngest?

    They like me.
    But I manage usually....
Just don't do it by choice, but circumstances change!

    What is the 'chuddy' ?

LS shirt & trous' for me, BB cap & headnet, usually carry a pair of cheap cotton gloves for around camp for walking it's just a dab of DEET on the back of the hands. Choosing when/ where to stop for a break or to pitch up helps a lot.
The other beasts to be aware of are Clegs (deer flies), kind of like a huge Midge (same mouth design but size of a house fly). They're not in the same numbers as Midge but more tenacious & can deal with higher wind speeds; the NW can be bad for them. The ba****ds can also bite through thin or looser weave fabrics (some base layers), I've taken to wearing a LS cotton/ polyester shirt (Nosilfe) in the summer as effect protection.

Was going to mention the glegs, but then i thought they would be a nice surprise.

Couple of years ago I was around Ben Hope for 4 days, the weather was fantastic. The midgies were mad, the glegs were fkn mental, had to bin the shorts

Gathered 40 - 50 really itchy big lumps around the shoulders & back (landing out of sight) though a thin base layer up around Ullapool a few years back; taught me a lesson......never to be repeated.

I've been to NZ a couple times and 'met' your sandflies :cautious:. The sandfly bite is much worse than a midge bite but you can 'avoid' or 'deter' sandflies.
Midges come in their millions and are a pest - they collect in your hair, eyes, nose and mouth. I've found no chemical that is an effective deterent - only a 'barrier' or a breeze will keep them at bay. Eight o'clock in the eve. the wind brops an you are mobbed by the blighters. Best to be zipped up in your shelter by then.

Clegs (horse flies) are EVIL. They attack from behind so you don't see them coming. Wear tough fabric clothing and get your mate to walk behind you so he/she can swat them ASAP. There is such satisfaction in killing as many posssible. :angelic::D.

PS. Clegs are seasonal and July is the worst. Usually gone by Sept.

Chuddy= cojones, crown jewels, knapsack, nads, ball bag.

A Midged Chuddy is nearly as unappealing as the thought of Rog's eyebrow raising choice of hiking underwear.
I'm slightly amused that those calling chewing gum chuddy have been sucking/chewing them all this time. :)
