As it's Johnny Cash Friday a tribute of sorts, turn it up.

Some poet/musician's audition for Fleetwood Mac. No wonder he got the guernsey.

Oh dear, is it 'cringe at the past being cool' time? Strange that they seem to be playing in a studio borrowed from University Challenge... Still a great song though and a great group. Never heard it in German before, oddly.

Maybe we could get that supreme linguist Wayne Newton to sing it-in German of course!

Wrong clothes? I was just a kid in 1976 (as I've coincidentally been mentioning elsewhere, it's the first year I was able to consciously identify at the time) but surely the whole point of punk as regards clothes – early punk, before it went all hipster in the 80s – was that you wore whatever you happened to put on? Anything else would be, well, fashion.

Here's my contribution, I'm a bit of a soul & house head, anyone else?

This track has been remade & covered by so many artists/times, but I love the original.

Not so much of that kind of soul, but I read a great series of books a while back about the history and evolution of soul music against the backdrop of American history, particularly the Civil Rights movement. This was the first of the series:

One of the things I hadn't realized before reading that (or rather, the third, which covers Harlem in 1969) is the extent to which today's rap is descended from soul.

Netflix has a great movie starring Eddie Murphy playing Rudy Ray More, 70's comic & actor, who picked up stories from a homeless guy and developed his outrageous alter ego Dolemite, who spoke in rhyme and told stories that were funny, and went on to become a success and release a few movies. His style is said to be the inspiration for modern rap.

Gil Scott-Heron is another artist, who spoke and rapped over his music, which probably turned into hip hop later on. I was fortunate see him live at Somerset House a few years ago.

Then there's also acts like The Last Poets, radical, political 'rapping' over beats.

Gil Scott-Heron and the Last Poets both featured in that book. I think the Last Poets have been through quite a few incarnations since then though. But there was also the revelation (to me)* that one of the big rappers (I think it was Jay Z) was the son of, IIRC, a minor soul singer and a member of the Black Panthers who was involved in some sort of kidnapping. I've forgotten the details though...

*To be honest, this is an admission of having given it insufficient consideration, isn't it? Hmm... <insert embarrassed eye rolling emoji>

    Okay, here's something completely different:

Cooling out is vaguely applicable to what I'm meant to be doing now, which is contributing in my own small way to global peace and security, international cooperation, brotherhood and love; or rather, writing about a conference taking place in the Middle East of people who supposedly think they are doing that. So I really ought to get on with it before I either fall asleep or run up against my deadline...

Nice find. I don't know much about reggae, but I've started to add to my collection in the last couple of years. This fits into the style I like. Good luck with your deadline.

Here's one back to you, later covered by Dawn Penn

And here's something completely different. Polish prog rock. You might have been forgiven for not knowing such a thing existed. You might wish you still didn't...
