Speedster, Penny, Fancy Feast, Cat stoves. ( Smaller cat stove better but both are meths guzzlers but fast boils.)
Fancy Feast is better than the Cat Stove.
Vaseline tin version of the Speedster....weighs a few more gms.

Tried making Wind Shields cut out out from pop/lager cans pinched from Sainsbury's recycling.
Held together with a paper clip.
Pot lid is Aluminium foil.
Most efficient stove system that always seems to come out best is the Speedster and a Caldera Cone or one of Trail designs set-ups.

Forgot to add this.........
Packed up in a cut-off Aldi water bottle with 450ml pot.

This something I've been looking at for a while, how much meths do you use to boil a litre of water?

My basic Wild camping/Backpacking, stove/wind shield set up weighs 100gms with the 600ml Titanium Evernew pot.
This set up is saved for overnighters.
Other MYO stoves used on Day Walks.

Ziplock bag, Cut-off Innocent juice bottle, Speedster Stove, (now well worn and lid doesn't screw on any more; but can still close by pressing on and still spill proof.),
Cathy kindly made me a lower height Caldera Cone for the 600ml pot...fits a dream.........
The plastic Innocent bottle is firm enough so that the Cone won't be damaged.

10 ml Meths boils 600mls water with spare meths left for a second boil.
Also depends if the stove is in a sheltered position...or not......

Sheltered position set up saves Meths.
Speedster stove always been efficient...... best of the crew :).

Most important tho, AFA ladies concerned.... Cathy and FWC will relate,
Meths bottle shoved down bosom 5 minutes before to warm before brewing up for a jet powered brew.

That is very good half to a third of what I've found so far, using a mini trangia and windshield.

Why do they do that, does anyone know? I've just made my third tonight, the last one is ceased up after a recent trip. Is it the fuel reacting or is ally just crap for screw threads?

My latest Starlyte copy is deeper than my last two, stills takes 30ml of fuel though. Five layers of welding mat topped with carbon wick and steel bug screen, test boil went very well earlier.

It is amazing how well cleavage powered warming works. :D

Need to get a cone to work with the Alpkit 650 and Speedster stove.

Can't beat Annie's though

I cheated..... the stove was warmed down the bosom as well:giggle::jawdrop::laugh::laugh::roflmao:

Tried the Speedster in the Trail Designs cone but too much distance between base of pot and flame.....thats why I chatted up Cathy to knock up a much lower cone.

When I use those Cat Stoves out on day walks, they will guzzle up 15 to 20 mls to boil up 450 mls, :banghead: but they ARE fun to play with..:joyful:.usually a non sheltered set up too.

10 ml of meths to boil 600 ml of water with spare meths leftover for another boil. Wow, got to see this in action, you have discovered the holy grail of alcohol stoves.
Just checked the science:
Assuming perfect combustion of 10ml of 100% ethanol, a 600ml boil of water from 10C, ignoring energy needed to heat pot etc = 90% efficiency.
I've found the best achievable is ~50% efficiency (e.g. 500ml boil using 15ml)
Seeing is believing though.

Out tomorrow and will give it another go.:D

"Oh no".....jury will say guilty now..:banghead::banghead::banghead:. Death Penalty looming...just re read above. I have the 600 ml pot and said 600 ml to boil...I only put in about 500ml don't I..........DUH..............silly me......Otherwise I'd have a flooded tent..:jawdrop::rolleyes:

Will I ever live this down!!...Whiteburn.....???
Will I be banished from the Forum............"Yes", says Gixer....p.'lease.........
Another one who's off to get her coat.....in shame....over 100mls..........:cry::cry::cry::cry:

Sod boiling water...I'll take up Lager:jawdrop::jawdrop:
:hilarious:

I've managed 62% efficiency in ideal indoor conditions with my beer-can kelly kettles which use my 4g lip balm tin meths stoves.

There seems to be a lot of figures bandied around here involving fuel weights and efficiency considering that no one has mentioned starting water temperature

Rog Tallbloke

Thru Hiker
When calculating efficiency, you subtract the starting water temperature from the end temp (100C if you're at sea level and measuring time to boil) and multiply by the volume. Then divide by the fuel mass used. Then work out what that figure is as a percentage of the theoretical maximum, using the heat of combustion figure for the fuel used.

Sorry Rog, I was unclear; I meant regarding LG's 10ml for 500ml of water.
Personally the best I've been able to do in no wind is somewhere under 8g of fuel (I don't have the exact figure with me) to boil 4ooml of water from 15 degrees.

Thru Hiker
8g for 400ml over 85C is an extremely good result using a conventional pan setup.

Meths has an HHV of around 28MJ/Kg and water's specific heat capacity is 4.186 joule/gram/°C

400ml of water = 400g, over 85C = 400 x 4.186 x 85 = 142324J

142324 / 28000 = 5.083g of fuel at 100% efficiency.

5.083 / 8 = 0.635 = 63.5% efficiency.

How long did it take?
