Locus Gear Khufu (Was "Khufu Inner")

rarely see backpackers carrying less. Usually people express surprise we are camping out with the pack size we have. From my experience, I think the really low pack weights/sizes sometimes seen on here are a tiny extreme minority of backpackers.
My experience too. In fact even backpackers doing trails but staying in hostels/hotels etc usually have much larger packs than I do.

I didn't actually say that I'd not notice a difference in packweight of 1kg. I can feel the difference between a days food.

But with the majority of backpacking loads* it's at most a 10% variation either way.

Not really a 'make or break' the trip, quantity?
It must have been this that confused me
In reality, after a few days, as portion of packweight I'd hardly notice whether my shelter is 1.8kg or 1kg.
:whistling:
Regarding the first quote, I think we kind of agree. I would never make weight the sole or main criterion in choosing a shelter - the Swiftline goes on more trips with us than the Duplex but weighs nearly twice as much. But if both are equally suitable for the expected conditions, guess which one we choose. So I get the search for a lighter tent IF it will satisfy the other needs you have in a shelter, and you can afford it. And if the lightest tent that meets your needs weighs 1.8kg, you have to take a 1.8kg tent.
Slightly off topic, it's the longer trips where the extra weight would bother me as the food and water would be putting me nearer to where the total weight would indeed be getting to "make or break". On those trips, I'll look to minimise weight where I can, missing out on a few comfort items. On shorter trips I have more leeway for a heavier pad, better pillow etc.

After being in the same boat, looking for a new lighter weight less bulky packed tent I decided to buy the new version of the Scarp 1 second hand (brand new). Its weighs in at 1.4kg with 8 pegs and packs much smaller than the Scarp 2, which means it fits now in the side or front pockets of all nearly all my packs. The other plus is that I know how it performs (very well indeed) and how easy the pitch is, plus if needs be I can get the GF in there as well :)

Where´s @JonB ,when you need him? He´s very experienced with high-end-mids like LG or HMG...
@gixer : You´re not happy with the SS2? It was on my wish-list (solid inner)...

So, back on the forum again.

Regarding the pitching problem. I have also noticed that both the Khufu and the UltaMid sometimes gets problems with one of the sides being totally off, like ArneL describes.

I've found that the best way to deal with this is to more or less start all over again with the corners. Trying to find a good balance between them.

My guess is that this problem come from the 100% stiffness of the material. Normal silnylon stretches and compensates for things like this. Cuben not as much.

Read somewhere here that this could be an effect of the strong catenary curves of the Khufu but I would disagree on this as I've hade the same problems with HMGs UltaMid.

Hi,

I am looking for a new inner for my Khufru.

Do you think that these models could fit ?

HI,

Thanks

Does anyone find an inner tent closed to the shape of the Locus Gear Khufu mesh 2/3 ?
Length 230cm x Width 100cm x Height 130cm

I have another question about opening and closing the front panel while I am inside the shelter. I noticed that it's sometimes tricky to tie the cord loop to sthe stake while I am inside the shelter and obviously to untie it when I want to open the door. Does anyone find a good procedure to to do that ?

Best

You could also just buy an inner from Locus Gear?

They're not that expensive, quality will be superiour and it will fit perfectly in your Khufu.

You're right. I already have a full inner from Locus Gear. I just want to find a cheaper half or 2/3 one.
If the dimensions match, ( I haven't checked), the Asta inner is probably best bet - as as the Asta has the cat cut seams similar to the Khufu

Hmmmmmmmmm

Was edging towards the 3/4 inner, recon the full inner looks better though

Only concern is getting the inner floor wet when exiting the tent in the wet

Full inner is great in the snow fall because the weight of the snow tends to reduce the space inside the tent. So sleeping in the middle leave enough space.

When is wet I unstake the right corner (the corner close to the entrance) before, and stake again when I am in.

The door of my inner have both mesh and solid so that I can manage the airflow.

Why would you fold it?

Takes up precious hiking-time... :D

Stuffing works really well with silnylon IMO.

To avoid to break the plastic part of the vent at the top of the tent and to easily manage to put it in the stuff bag

I wouldn't really worry about the plastic part. I stuffed my cuben version plenty of times in a loose stuff sack without any damage.

The stuff sack from Locus Gear is way too small IMO; I use a 15L mesh stuff sack from Sea to Summit. Plenty big.
