Berghaus Fast Hike 45 pack

Partially agree with you, it's better than Berghaus' usual vast heavy packs, but it still seems a bit of half-hearted attempt at an ultralight pack. For a pack that size I'd want a hip-belt, and it's not particularly light unless the belt and a lot of other stuff is missing.

A roll-top version of their (now-discontinued) Hyper 37 would be a better bag, and probably lighter.

I think that seems pretty good for the price. Not all their packs were always heavy. The first bag I ever bought was a Cyclops Roc. Comfortable with a big load and really pretty minimalist. Wasn't particularly light but it was 1982 and canvas was still the only option for material.

It's got a removable hip belt. My point was that I'd prefer a pack that size to have a belt, but the pack appeared to be quite heavy unless the belt (and some other bits) were removed.

It's starting at 930g which for 45 litres isn't bad is it? There's virtually nothing available at that price point by any other manufacturer at that size. Just ditching the stay will probably lop over 100g off it.

So out of interest what do people think are better alternatives for under £100? Although I suspect with discounts, etc. this will soon be available for around £85 or less.

730g all in but frameless
Pretty sure a ks50 without lots of options added is ~100 notes. ~350-400g
Terra nova laser 35 ~420g with hip belt and pockets. Just what I've got in my drawer.
Having made a few packs 500+g seems quite heavy for a 45l without hip belt, but for UK commercially available stuff seems pretty good.

I came close to buying a very reduced Octans 40 online. Fortunately I found a nearby shop with one so went to check it first. Glad I did, was quite flimsy with no support, thin straps etc. Looked like a sack of spuds when packed. The fast hike is different and does look better though.

I've been using the Octans 40 for quite a few years now and actually it's a pretty comfy pack if it's packed well with sensible weight. Definitely a bag of spuds but it is a really light pack. Only prob I've had with it is the PU coating on the inside has started peeling in certain areas. Good to see they've came up with an updated pack, but once the fast hike has been tripped to get a similar weight to the Octans, wonder how that would effect the comfort anyway..
