Whose harvesting the Chinese for down? I thought it came from geese......
The ethical sourcing of cheap Chinese down.
With a bacon butty and tea in a plastic mug.
That's OK then, cos I know you only buy free range pork, and fair trade tea
Hope the milk powder isn't Nestlé though
Why - don't you trust uniqlo as a paragon of ethical virtues?
Sadly, the majority of the big highstreet mountain fashion labels don't mention the precise origins of their down (some vaguely state 'European' whatever that is supposed to mean) - and of course some don't even specify the weight or grade of the down in their expensive jackets (not that uniqlo does either...).
Some relevant info - including uniqlo - here:
Cheap and ethical do not mix.
I bought one last winter, been pleased with it. It's not patagucci but then it cost me twenty quid. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/HOT...668.html?spm=a2g0s.90423184.108.40.206aa4c4dzgcIcx
Depends really - if the 'cheap' has come about as a result of outsourcing the true costs of an item, onto someone, or something else, then then no, cheap and ethical rarely mix.
But 'affordable' and ethical can mix, it just takes a bit more effort to inform yourself, and to do some leg work in the sourcing.
Second-hand can be cheap(er) and ethical.
How far did you size up? Whats the story with shipping? I never seem to get the quick that everyone else seems to get Am i doing something wrong or i am just sh*t outa luck when it comes to Aliexpress stuff?
I bought 6 of these (2 for me, rest for others).
I sized up one size at first (M>L), fits fine. Then I went for my regular size (M), fits better. Only exception is the M is a bit short, but doesn't bother me. My uncle needed to size up one size and it fit snugly so that was right for him.
I've worn these with a baselayer down to -7°C, but I run very warm. Still performing well after almost 2 years of regular usage.
Each one took about a month to arrive.
Are they just one size small? For example if you're L go for XL?
I found the gilet a little snug, one size up would have been fine.
@Gadget if you let me know the sizing and model I am happy to pick them up for ya and post!
I bought a size large. I'm 5'10" (177cm) and 74kg, slim/medium build and it's a very good fit for me. I'd usually buy a medium in just about everything else.
Spent £25 on this one in the end,
700fp and good reviews, I will report back.
Pretty happy with it... for 25 quid!
322g for the XL
Compares favorably with my mates Rab Microlight Summit.
The zips could be its eventual downfall, look pretty cheap, but I'll live with that for the money.
This is a really important issue and thankfully it seems Chinese down producers are starting to get the idea. Over 250 Chinese down producers / outdoor gear makers are now approved by the 'Responsible Down Stardard'
(sorry it's a very boring link)
Even Aegismax have the RDS logo on their website although I've emailed RDS to see if this is legit
As you say many Chinese ads have certs that have obviously just been cut and pasted. Good on ya for doing the research, I'd be interested.
From looking at the RDS website it would appear China produces most of the world's ethical down. Not surprising when you consider they consume 2 thirds of the duck and geese reared for food .
Pangolin, snakes, Canis lupus familiaris...
I bought some bat fur moccasins on Ali express last month.
I wore mine out.
Pangolin much more durable, but you pay with the weight.
