Cumulus Quilt 350

I asked them about a custom build a few days ago and Rafal got back to me about three days later to explain the current options.

One of the things I asked about was a zip for the footbox and the reply was, ‘this is it available right now’

I also asked about material and colours and he seems open to change.

They've always been very open to change. They didn't say no, simply asked that I contact them again at the end of the month.

I suspect they may be about to extend their sleeping bag creator to quilts in order to streamline custom orders.

Possibly, the first email I got back from them was this;

Hello Dave,
thank you for your e-mail and nice words.

We do offer custom quilts. They are not available in our creator on the website but we can talk via e-mail and I can offer you something.:)

Kind regards
Rafał Buczek
CUMULUS

And the second;

Hello Dave,
when it comes to the size:
-we can offer you quilt longer by one (16cm) or two (32cm) down chambers,
-we can offer also quilt wider by 10cm or 22cm.
Of course in any case there will be more down to compensate extra space.

We use only 850cuin since this is the highest fill power still not plucked from living geese.
Colors: black, olive or graphite are available if you would like to stick to the original fabric (Pertex Quantum 27g).

Zipper in the footbox is not available right now.

The hydrophobic down is available.

Let me know changes you would like to apply, I will prepare the specific pricing offer.

Kind regards
Rafał Buczek

Interesting.

Their exact words (not from Rafal but someone else) yesterday were :"At this time our quilts are not available as we are during the process of introducing new versions."

I guess eveything will be revealed at the end of the month.

I think so, they've just redesigned the lite line bags series so they'll do same with quilts. You can still check taiga 150 topquilt - little better EE enigma. It's afaik vertical buffel quilt with diff cut, neck collar & nicely shaped footbox. "Normal" quilts probably gonna have similar design features.. I hope:rolleyeses:

Still no ETA on the revamped quilts but Cumulus got back to me with some info and it looks like they are moving in EE/KG territory (existing quilts will be superseded by the very similar Taiga). The new line will be 140 cm wide with a slight taper at the bottom, top and bottom cinch cords with a draft tube and a zippered footbox also with a draft tube. Yay!

They mentioned "rounded chambers" which is a bit of a mystery...

[Addendum: the "rounded chambers" are just like those of the comforter, going the whole width of the quilt which possibly means that the comforter's down migration syndrome could rear its ugly head again]

I was expecting this week or next from the comms I’ve had with them. I’ve held off ordering a true summer quilt for that reason.

I was very close to placing an order for a 350 quilt about 30 mins ago. Was hesitating and then I find this news about some redesigns. Going away for the end of May bank holiday. Looking forward to seeing what changes are coming with the new ones, or perhaps discounts on the old ones...

I also keep changing my mind about which amount of fill to get too. Interesting to see that Dave finds his 350 too hot, but I guess I'll never know until I've actually tried one myself. I'd just about settled on the 350 but I keep second guessing that would I find the 250 sufficient most the time, or do I get the 450 cause it was freezing last April. I can't really justify getting more than one so 350 seems a good all rounder.

The popular US 20 deg quilts all seem to have 350g fill, and not many with down as good as cumulus.

Just to ease your quandary: 250 and 350 quilts appear to be out of stock (there is a small message saying product not available in this size but there is only one size). Only 150 and 450 left for now.

I may have a 350 quilt for sale in the short future though...

I agree with Enzo, quality-wise they are as good as the good American ones.

Very good price too. Ummm... I wonder why it's on sale. Surely, it isn't soon to be discontinued...

Good price, if you priced up the cost of materials let alone the labour for all 36 baffles!

I've used my 250 down to -3 and -2, although the latter had an extra wind chill creeping into my tarp.

Both times I was warm and could have taken the quilt to lower temperatures, but at the same time, I wouldn't have been disappointed with the extra warmth a 350 would have provided.

Down here I'm moving to my 150 cumulus now, packing a ghost whisperer just in case mind you.

Part of me wishes I'd gone for a 150 for 2 season use and 350 for 4 season.

Looks like I'll have to make do with a 250 for 3.5 seasons for now.

I use my down jacket too when needed.

Just got a reply to my email I sent last week:

"It is true, that we are going to introduce the new Quilts, they should be available on sale by the end of next week.

The main changes are new fabrics, continuous baffles and YKK zip at the bottom allowing to create a footbox with two self-locking sliders (and it can by fully opened and used as a flat blanket)."

Makes sense if your carrying the warmth in discreet bits to use it as a system

I recon I can get my 250 down to at least -5 with a down jacket and base-layers. I was toasty as -3 (with an additional wind chill). The limitations were more to do with the pad attachment system, I used it but it wasn't very good so I'm going to try and come up with a better system.

Depends how cold you sleep i guess, 2 weeks ago I was in a tent with base layers, must have been a cold night as it was frosted in the morning, maybe -2C ?...i wasn't that warm in a Panyam 450. Might have had an insulated vest on, cant remember.

Shirley if you're in a shelter then the wind chill temp is not relevant?... you're not exposed to the wind.
