Please can you recommend a 1-person tent that can deal with UK gusty wind & rain in winter.

Hi,

I'm looking for 1P person tent that can handle UK winter maybe up to half way up our little mountains.

Thoughts on features:

-- Decent wind and rain resistance. Including rain from the side. Doesn't need to be Himalayan expedition standard.
-- I have a 1P Xmid, something with better wind resistance than this.
-- Decent sixed vestibule.
-- Roomy, not one of those tunnel tents please. Certainly not a bivvy.
-- Good quality
-- Durable
-- Light as possible.
-- Want to be in at 1am in poor weather and be confident that it won't fail. Don't want to be thinking '**** this thing's going to fall apart, what am I going to do if does? Curl up in my survival bag as all my expensive kit gets blown around the mountain waiting for sunrise'
-- I like the Hilleberg Soulo. Don't like the price. Maybe a clone...
-- Priced for a Yorkshireman.

Interesting, I have a Dan Durston X Mid right now. I'm looking for something stronger than that in the wind. I know single pole pyramids are better in the wind but how do they compare to geodesics like the Soulo?

How would this compare to other pyramids in terms of wind resistance? Would the Sil Hex Peak differ signficantly to a Lanshan 1 or SMD Lunar Solo in terms of wind resistance?

Properly pitched, the Hexpeak is far better in wind than a Lunar Solo and a Lanshan.

Have you tried the XMid in wind?
It's not bad. Though I'd say the Hexpeak has the edge.

I don't know of any Soulo clones. It's a heavy beast for the space too. Not for me.

A Tarptent Scarp 1 with crossing poles is pretty good. But maybe out of your price range. Though half the cost of a Soulo.

Thanks, interesting it's better than the other similar designed tents. That's good to hear.

Yeah, I was up Cadair Idris lake last night with it. Admittedly I pitched it badly due to running out of light, boggy ground, thick grass, general incomptence, etc. But all the main pegs stayed in. I want to feel more secure in the wind. Not blaming the tent, more my fault.

Hexpeak is not really that similar to the lanshsn or Lunar solo. Quite different structurally really.

Yes. That isnt a great XMid pitch. But it stayed up, so was secure?
Maybe you'd feel more secure if it was pitched better and didn't flap so much. You might be conflating security with lack of flap n noise?


And yes I agree with Ed, that a Stratospire is better in wind than an Xmid.

( I have XMid 1p and Stratospire2)

At the risk of stating the obvious, if you want a 'bomber' shelter in most conditions a trailstar with a Chinese mid inner is a go-to winter option for many on the forum.

If you pop a wtb on the forum you can probably pick up a 2nd hand one and if you don't pay over the odds (check the price of previous sales on the forum), you can be confident of re-selling it for what you paid or it if you decide it's not for you.

Hilleberg don't market the Soulo as geodesic, its a three pole dome. Hex shelters like the Luxe Hex Peak don't compare - totally different animals. I have both, there is nothing wrong with a hex, but the Soulo is a beast that radiates quality.

You're probably looking at the 'Aluxe Hexpeak v4a' that Diddi mentioned. They are extremely stable in winds, comparable to a Trailstar.

On that note, have you considered a Trailstar?

I wouldn't rush out and buy a new tent. I would keep on practicing and pushing the tent you've already got. Give it a good go before you make a decision.:thumbsup:
I've noticed some good sheltered camping spots at that lake, that's what I look for and do my best to give myself enough time to get a good pitch.
You get those swirling gusty winds, and sometimes coming over the top's in the cwm's, but other than a noisy night, it won't wreck your tent if it's pegged well,I've found.
I'm not a fair weather camper as such but I stay out of the wind as much as possible in the first place. That way I can use my three season tent all year round.
