Finished my first myog project, an Apex 200 quilt.

Finished weight: 820g, a little more than I wanted (700ish) but I erred on the side of caution with the taper and seam allowance.

Final dimensions: 136x195x120

All the materials from https://www.extremtextil.de/en/ which came to around 90 euros.

Sorry no actual build pictures but I essentially copied Backcountrybanter https://backcountrybanter.com/how-to-build-a-synthetic-top-quilt-diy-myog/ with th exception of the drawcord channels.
I placed my channels on top of the whole stack resulting in them being inside the quilt. I also placed a grommet in advance to reinforce the hole for the cord. The footbox uses a cyberian cordlock and the head end has an offset hole to keep the cord out of my face :)

I also made an "edge tension" system with some elastic braid which snaps onto the quilt snaps.

Advice for anyone looking to do this:
  • Cut all three layers to the dimensions you want and
  • Be carefull about the seam allowance, my cord grommets are closer to the edge than I wanted.
  • edge tension works well but would work better if there were more snaps along the quilt.
  • save more weight in the taper and trim excess material after the main big stitch

Just waiting for my parcel to arrive from Germany.... doubt i’ll get mine done anytime soon as my sewing machine skills are still at the woeful stage yet!!!

My parcel arrived today :) Does it matter what way outer matt material is when you stitch it together? As in does it matter which side of the material is up or down? Shiny or not so shiny or what?

I can see from the back country banter vid that the material he uses has a shiny and a more shiny side. I know it’s different to the extremtextile that i bought.

The sides are different because one is coated. This coated side should be facing outwards on the finished quilt, atleast for the top of the quilt. I also faced this outwards ie towards me on the bottom of the quilt because it felt softer (although could be more clammy?)

You could try running it under a tap and seeing which side beaded best?

I made my warmer bag using extreme Tex 10d and pertex endurance, I'm sure I looked into it then and that bag is Matt.

A shiny side could be the calendared side of the fabric? This is generally on the inside in commercial gear. Though it won't matter being outside on a syn quilt.

DWR treatment isn't generally visible as a "coating". If it's an actual waterproof fabric the pu coating should also be on the inside, as in clothing/tents.

Not seen that fabric before, nice mix of durability weight and price by the looks of it.

Almost exactly 1oz/yd2 for comparison.

10,000 g/m2 is probably comparable to the 10d fabrics from rsbtr, adventurexp and Dutchware too.

Just emailed extrem and they replied in about 30 mins... They say the water bead test is the way to go as it’s hard to tell with the naked eye. :)

So in the increasing madness of lockdown cabin fever, I'm thinking of making a summer apex quilt to use in an Alpkit Hunka bivvy bag, which has proven to be a bit condensation prone in the past so don't want to use my down bag.

We have a sewing machine which Mrs Davy is reasonably adept at using should I get out of my depth.

Is this a daft idea?

Go for it.

It's one of the easiest Myog projects to do.

For bivvying, a closed footbox is best. That's simple to do too.

The actual measuring and putting the bits where you want them and pinning it looks straight forward... the stitching on the other hand might take a bit of faffing with!! practice practice practice that’s what i’m doing at the mo before i start the actually quilt sewing :)

Warmth and lack of faff in use.

No need to have it openable in a bivi?

Zip n drawstring a little more fiddly work than a circular end panel

and an Apex 133 quilt.... in glorious orange on the outside and very very dark grey* on the inside.





100 Euros inc. postage it seems....

Going for the draw-string footbox for now as it has more straight lines and will work open in the van. Now to break the news to Mrs Davy......

Good job. Some of my materials have arrived for my first MYOG project - 2 x Apex quilts - just a few more bits to arrive and I can get started.

Had a quick question about the cyberian cord lock, can't tell from the photos - Is the release handle just a free loop of webbing/grosgrain ribbon attached to the release portion of the lock?

On the GramExpert site it looks as though it's also attached to the shell fabric but I guess that would put strain on the fabric and also make it difficult to operate.
