Stormin's cone (aluminium, 35g) has served me very well and will I hope carry on doing so for some time yet. Not cheap but worth it (unless you're handy enough to make your own).

Evernew 900 Ti pot (112g) is perfect for a meal plus hot drink.

I plan to boil 750ml of water twice a day, for which (in reasonably mild conditions) I allow 25ml per boil, or 30ml if I want a short simmer as well. Thus an 8oz Vargo fuel bottle (weighs 30g) is perfect for a 4-day hike. It is a cool container with its easy-pour spout and its handily graduated markings. One of the things you will welcome having come from gas is the way you can now see exactly how much fuel you have left!

Baseplate is a trimmed-to-size foil pie dish at 9g.

I used to use a MYOG Pot Cosy until I realised what it weighed (40g). Now I use my beanie instead, turned inside out so any soot from the pot will only end up on the outer worn side. It helps if your beanie has a different colour inside and out.

As for meths vs bioethanol, I use both and find there's not much difference. If anything bioethanol has the edge in burning a tiny bit hotter and cleaner and having less smell, but the difference is very slight in my experience.

For pots in the 650 - 1300ml range the Evernew burner is a thirsty beast, IME it consumes about 30% more fuel than the best.
It perhaps would come into its own using a 2L pot for melting snow.

I used the Evernew burner when cooking in big pots, for the family (4), anything else and you'd be waiting forever. It's much too powerfull for anything less than 1l.

For the Toakes 650 (95mm diameter) I'd recommend the Speedster 30ml.
The Toakes 900 (130mm diameter) would probably suit the Speedster 50ml & be ideal for a sidewinder type cone (pack in the pot).
You could use the 50ml with the Toakes 650, it would just be less efficient but faster boil.

who sells the sidewinder shield mr @Whiteburn

Just trying to work things out, does anyone know the specific gravity of meths/biofuel?

It's OK I've found it. 0.79

Caldera Cone is similar, but not the same as a Stormin' Cone

I considered the Speedster combined pot stand/windshield but though it too heavy. Bear in mind that with a properly fitted cone you don't need a pot stand as your pot is suspended within the cone from its lip. You just make any adjustment needed to the gap between stove and pot base by varying the height of your stove - I find mine doesn't need any.

Thanks again you lovely bunch.... very helpful and experienced i see.

Ye the stormin stuff looks quality like, just looking on his website, looks like i have 2 or 3 options,

1-go for this stormin cone (none adjustable) https://www.storminstovesystems.co.uk/product/stormin-cones/

2-go for the adjustable one using the silicone band the short cone https://www.storminstovesystems.co.uk/product/stormin-cones/

or
3-get a 550ml before i buy a cone. but i rember when looking at specs it looked like the 550 toaks pot would not fit a small gas cart in it.

has anyone got a 550ml toaks pot that could vouch for this please?

The 550 and 650 Toaks are the same diameter and will both hold a small gas cartridge, though gas cart + stove might be an issue for the 550. If you get a short cone with silicone band, you could use it for either pot.

The evernew burner primes quicker, burns hotter and is a lot more expensive than the cheapo Chinese equivalent. That's because it has a wicking gauze inside which vapourises the fuel more effectively. Being a cheapskate, I have the Chinese version, and sorted out the slow priming issue by glueing a small strip of carbon felt low down on the side, and soaking a couple of ml of fuel into it for priming.

My setup using a 1L Fire Maple knockoff of the jet boil heat exchanger pot will boil 750ml of 10C water in around 6.5 mins with 25ml of fuel. I reckon this is as good as it gets for tradeoff between speed and fuel efficiency. The downside is weight; 200g for the pot, 45g for the stove and another 45g for the cone. Good for two person winter camping use though.

My summer solo setup is under a quarter of the weight, and uses a Stormin cone and stove (throttled with a pie dish foil simmer ring), with a Heineken beer can pot. It takes about 7.5mins to boil 400ml of 10C water with 15ml of fuel.

One thing no-one has said - if you're really coming at this from a completely new setup, it could be worth just getting a speedster & a simple pot stand to start with, then maybe use some thick foil from a food container as a temporary wind shield solution.... then get the pan you think you want and give it a couple of goes on overnighters before you commit to a whole cone system. The cones are made to measure, so it'd suck to get one for a 550 pot then discover that's not quite enough to do whatever your usual meal + drink is. Or to find you just don't like the pan for some other reason, but then you're committed to it because you've spent on a cone already. Just a thought!

Simple windshield/ pot stand for the Alpkit 650 mug made from a large aluminium plater (£1 for 3 @ Poundland), Ti pins support the pot & pin the cylinder together. Works OK but mug geometry doesn't provide the best fuel efficiency (i.e. small diameter) & the windshield needs to be carried separately.

Forgot to add that for a Speedster type burner I'll set the from the top of the burner to base of pot to be 30mm......undulations in the ground can easily vary this +/- 5mm which I've found not to vary the efficiency noticeably. Conversely gaps of less than 25mm or greater than 35mm have noticeable impacts.

Are they really?
I thought they were a different size.... was a while ago since I looked tho.

I'm sure they do a lighter weight version.

Good suggestion with the short pot and silicone band tho.

Again..... thank you so much for your replies and helpful advice .

Ok so my idea was to get a smaller pot.. 550ml but for what its worth in time hassle and money I may aswell stick with my 650ml... it will do for what I want and I suppose I will have slightly more room in the 650ml to cram more 'bits' in.

I don't tend to use the 900ml much either atm.

Question is the stormin cone or the adjustable cone with silicone band......

I'm not that keen on using a tin foil windshield the as the flames tend to get blown about which I'm not keen on.

Has anyone got one of either?
