I've been looking for instant beans / freeze dried beans for a really long time but can not find them in europe.
If anyone knows a place that sells them in europe i'd greatly appreciate a link.

Pinto beans are easy enough to find in the supermarkets over here, I’ve used them in meals but never tried mashing and drying them

I dehydrate a mixed bean chilli (various cans of beans, canned tomatoes, onions, garlic + spices) but don't mash the beans. I usually cold soak (70 -80g) for a couple of hours in a Sunpet container, after which they could be consumed cold, then add to the pot with Asda 5 minute rice & 250ml cold water. After bringing to the boil I put in the cosy for 7 - 8 mins...…….a big tasty meal.

But where are the Fritos? ;)

As a more-or-less vego I've been dead keen to try this recipe, but haven't been able to get the beans in the UK; Shayona now have them back in stock, although at a higher price and with a higher delivery charge. Still, it's cheaper than buying on ebay.

Now I need to find the 'instant' rice without a ton of excess packaging...

Good to know about the beans source.

I'd be interested to hear which rices people have been using though.

Tentmeals do a good one (apprently with bonus vitamins). Works great for cold soaking and nice to support a small UK business. They also have a bunch of other great ingredients, including the most reasonably-priced freeze-dried strawberries I've come across, in case you fancy a bit of luxury in your trailmix. I bought a lot of my hiking meal ingredients from them before Brexit put a stop to it.

Now use the exact same Uncle Ben's 3-min rice that @shutupthepunx linked. It's not as good though. Tentmeals rice retains its structure. Uncle Ben's is like rice crispy texture prior to rehydrating, and becomes far too easily mushy after.

Maybe I'm missing something but there's nothing magic about refried beans so that you have to import them or buy them online. Just pinto beans or kidney beans cooked up with onion, maybe garlic and plenty of oil, then mashed up. Or you can use any bean, my favourite are black turtle beans.

Black beans + broccoli + rice + spices, very nice , and I'm not even that keen on broccoli.

Agree to a certain extent........skip the oil, it only helps the product go rancid quicker; add after rehydration if desired.
My simple recipe for beans is just onion, tomatoes, garlic, paprika, chilli & cumin cooked up into a thick sauce add canned beans (pinto, red, black, etc) & then dehydrate. I don't bother with mashing as I'll just be mixing with Asda 5min rice not spreading on tortillas.
