Sleeping bag cover

True, by the time you've bought a Kam Snap set, a rotary cutter etc etc it gets expensive, unless you're going to make lots of stuff - which then becomes a natural progression. I've now got to make enough things to use up 300 Kam Snaps :o o: ... or I'll be inefficient.
I recon I'd need 2m of Tyvec 1442R to make one. This is on Ebay for £5.50 a metre plus £4 deliver. So the material itself would be £15.

Being a tent user, i've only had a damp sleeping bag at the foot from sliding down through the night and contacting the inner. Happened every trip last winter. 45g.
A half protector should be adequate:-

Decided to do a folded box end, easier to stitch...

I'm not convinced at the longevity of this material:confused: i hope the 3F one is tougher whoever ordered it. Not sure i'll use it yet, but its there.

Footbox looks good, could stick that together with tape, since the whole thing won't last long anyway. Is that what you did?

No @Clare its stitched, my competent wife folds the end in such a way to create that shape. It leaves a triangular section at each end which is cut off.
Whilst i look on with a stupid look on my face :)

I made a cover out of the dust sheet material. It’s 81g, including kam snaps and elastic and toggles. It has a shaped foot box and snaps to the existing kam snaps on my quilt.

I’ll post a “how to” step by step for @SafetyThird later.

I think it may be overkill, a foot box cover that attaches to the quilts kam snaps may be sufficient.

@Enzo i sewed it because that was easier around the foot box but the fabric is very thin and doesn’t pass through well. I reduced the machine’s foot pressure to 2 and used a long stitch.

Did anyone who made one of these get around to using it?
I did this weekend and it was a complete failure. Its not breathable at all. There was no moisture on the outside but inside my sleeping bag was absolutely drenched at the footbox.

That's a shame. You must have a different type, the sheet I have is highly breathable. Maybe they changed suppliers. Yours looks quite shiny in the pics, the kind I used looks like garden fleece with a hint of shine.

One side has a bit of gloss on it, the other is more matt. Its the ProDec Advance Dust Sheet i used - the one linked to earlier.

Doesn't sound too wrong. Maybe it's wierd Northern sweat?

Maybe my stock was faulty, there are micro holes all through it..easily visible when held up to the light. It's physically impossible for the stuf I used not to allow water vapour to pass through. I've used it as a liner inside non breathable Blizzard bags to keep my down jacket dry when sleeping in it.

You said you wouldnt mention my sweaty Calf problem...:(

I've just held it up to the light and theres no visible holes, and I've just tried holding it against my mouth and blowing through it and nothing is getting through. I gave up when i started feeling asphyxiated...:dead:

Oh! That’s sad and bad. I wonder how people have got on with the Ali express tyvek version?

Unsure to what Tyvek you have but the written side, is on the outside when applied to buildings.
Personally I wouldn’t use it but have you tried making one out of 20 dwr material.

I remember talking to Bob regarding this material https://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/category-57/XA107.html maybe make one out of that material.

That non-woven dust sheet is waterproof not breathable. Tyvek is supposed to be breathable but I've not tried my bag cover yet.

No such probs with a mesh inner :sneaky:

Just hope I don't get that problem with my new solid inner. (If I do I'll use my ul bivi)

Was thinking of trying this again to prevent the footbox getting damp through the cold months.

Anyone using anything thats any good? - something that actually keeps the footbox dry.

Or maybe dwr spraying the footbox?

Thinking of cutting one of these down and adding an elasticated or drawcord hem.

I've used my waterproof zipped over the end if needs be...
..... but most of my tents are long enough (or I'm short enough) that it's a non-issue for me mostly

That'll do a good job?

Was thinking of making one into a rucksack liner sack so it had dual purpose - but may affect the longevity.

Tried covering with rain kilt and rain jacket - still damp/wet in the morning.

Edit - the waterproof jacket might have worked but it was a smock and slid down through the night. The rain kilt wasn't breathable enough.

And the jacket might be wet if a foulweather camper?

Tyvek isn't waterproof though?. Well, not enough for a Rucsac liner .
