Well the pack came today, I was at work. I'll pick it up from Alloa in the morning. The forecast for the weekend has been rubbish all week but is now saying it's not going to be too bad. Got an appointment for four o'clock, think I'll head up to Aviemore after that, just to try the prospector out.

Picked it up this morning, this is it loaded with two days food and fuel. There's enough room inside for maybe three more days food as it is with the tent (Trekkertent Phreeranger) inside. I tried it with the tent on the outside, it fits really well in the side pocket and under the bungee. Loaded like that I think I could get enough food for seven days in there.

As it is kit = 7.3kg, food = 1.3kg, water = 1.6kg Total = 10.2kg.

Very nice @OwenM. I've got a Phreeranger as well, supporting cottage industries!

That looks excellent. Is the hipbelt removable? Velcro like a gossamer gear?

I don't think so, I've just had a quick look but think it's fixed.

40lt, I went for one hip and one shoulder pocket, the shoulder pocket will hold my glasses in their case which was handy as I can't see to read the map without them. I also tried my inReach in there it fitted OK. The hip pocket took my mini binoculars, compass and car keys without any bother. It would also just take a phone in a dry bag but it was a bit awkward getting it back in whilst still wearing the pack. Depends on how long your phone is I guess mines 14.5cm. It carried very well, as comfortable as 10kg can be. It took a bit of playing around with the straps at first but after that it was fine. I think it waterproof, I stuffed a wet tent and waterproofs on top of my other gear so there was some wet inside but I'm fairly sure it didn't come through the material. The bottom mesh pocket was a bit of a revaluation, when I read about it on his blurb I really didn't get it, I just couldn't picture it. But, I found it very handy for putting my map in.

Up to now I've been using a OMM classic 32 for weekend trips but found it just to small. if I wanted an extra days food or a warmer top it quickly became like a beach ball strapped to your back. Then I tried a ULA CDT which was like carrying a sack of spuds on your back. With this pack having a frame it carries the weight so much better. I found with the pack on I can get stuff out of the side pocket with my left hand but not with my right not sure what that's all about. That's about all I can think of to say about it for now at least.

Well my Atom prospector Mark 2 arrived today and I love it. There were some design issues with the original and Tom built this pack effectively for free after some design input.

Its slightly heavier than the previous version at 790 grams, mainly due to having a removeable. HDPE frame sheet & aluminium stay. I have to say it's superb, carries well and is really comfortable. The hip-belt is the best I've ever had.

The pack is around 40 to 45 litres so I can get everything I need in there plus around 5 days worth of food.

My Atom arrived last week (four weeks after order date) and I gave it an outing by doing an overnighter in the Mournes on Sunday night, worked very well indeed. Had the base model, 40Ltr with loadlifters and the shock cord on the side pockets. Now I want a prospector for the winter as I'd be carrying more stuff. I'll be taking the Atom over home to Ullapool next week for a weeks camping so it'll get a good workout then.
Very impressed indeed :)

Perhaps we ought to have an Atom Packs club!

Any body with a 40L Atom able to give me a bit of info?
Wondering if the body size/opening is bigger than the MLD burn im currently using or not:
25 cm Wide x 15 cm deep

Want something a bit bigger in width/depth to ease packing and unpacking on multiday trips. found it to be a real chore getting my gear in and out while keeping things balanced and loaded correctly for comfort on my back

I have no knowledge of the MLD pack but my Atom Prospector 40 litre is around 26cm x 18cm. The original prototype version I had was bigger than this but I had it made less deep. I had a choice of trapezoidal base or a round one (I went for round).

Best thing you can do is to email Tom Gale at Atom Packs and let him know your requirements, most of his work is custom and he will certainly let you know what's possible.

Cheers, i have already emailed him, but not going to chase him for a response as he is understandably busier than when he started off.

Hey, nice to be seeing my video here. Have been spitting through this thread to decide if I should order an Atom. If anyone's got any questions please shoot. So far only took it out for a quick overnighter, the first real test is going to be a month in Nepal in October.
